Extent: Mount ext4 Drives
Read & write Linux disks
Only for Mac
Free · In‑App Purchases
Mac
Plug in a Linux disk and it appears in the Finder. Reading ext2, ext3 and ext4 is free; writing ext4, kept safe by the journal as on Linux, is a one-time purchase.
Plug in a disk from Linux – a USB drive, the SD card from a Raspberry Pi, a disk from a server – and it appears in the Finder like any other. Extent reads ext2, ext3 and ext4 through the file system extensions built into macOS: no kernel extension, no lowered security settings, nothing to install beside the app.
READ – FREE
• ext4, ext3 and ext2 as current Linux distributions format them: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Raspberry Pi OS
• Disks mount on their own when you plug them in, in the Finder and in every app
• A disk that left Linux without being ejected reads as Linux will see it once it has finished its journal
• Symbolic links, permissions, extended attributes, and huge folders – tested with 100,000 files in one
• Disk images too: open an .img file from the File menu, or drop it on Extent's window
WRITE – ONE-TIME PURCHASE
• Create, change, rename and delete files on ext4 disks with a journal – the way Linux formats a disk today
• Extent writes through the disk's journal, as Linux does: a disk pulled out while writing comes back consistent, and what was saved stays saved
• Writing stays off until you turn it on, disk by disk
• ext2, ext3 and ext4 features Extent doesn't write yet – such as the case-insensitive folders of a Steam Deck's SD card – stay read-only, and Extent tells you why
CAREFUL BY DESIGN
• A disk on which Linux recorded damage stays read-only until it's checked there
• Extent keeps running in the menu bar while a Linux disk is connected, and ejects the disks cleanly when you quit it
• If a disk can't be read, Extent says why and what to do next; Help › Copy Diagnostics gathers the details for a support request
• No sign-up, no tracking, no network access
Try it without a Linux disk: Help › Open Sample Disk.
Requires macOS 27. Turn Extent on once in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions › File System Extensions.

Buying and restoring writing, made sturdier:
• If the App Store doesn't answer, Extent now says so and asks again, instead of leaving Unlock greyed out
• Restore and Unlock are always within reach, even while the App Store is slow to reply
• Clearer messages when the App Store can't be reached, or needs you to sign in to it again
