Your talk, minus the pauses. Tightcut lists each gap it plans to cut and shows the new length before you export. Paid at download, with no monthly fee.
Twenty minutes of you explaining something on camera usually carries a lot of air: the beat before an answer, the hunt for a word, the breath between two points. Tightcut finds those quiet stretches and cuts the recording down to the talking, so it moves at the pace of your speech rather than the pace of your thinking.
Start with a video from Photos or Files, or with an audio file from Files. Tightcut reads the whole recording and measures how loud it is from the first second to the last. Before anything is removed, the main screen shows three figures in large type: Original, Result and Shorter by. In plain words: how long the recording is now, how long it will be, and what percentage of it is going away.
Tap the Remove silence card to see where those figures come from. Under Parts to remove, each stretch Tightcut plans to drop is listed with its start, its end and its duration. If a pause belongs in the video, such as the beat before a punchline or a laugh you want to hear, tap its line and it stays. Tap it again and it goes back to being cut. The figures at the top follow each change as you make it.
Rooms are not equally quiet, so detection can be tuned. Strict, Standard and Loose set how quiet a stretch has to be before it counts as silence. Loose accepts a noisier background as quiet and removes more; Strict removes less. When your room falls between the presets, turn on Set the level myself and drag the threshold in decibels. Breathing room leaves a short margin of sound on each side of a cut. That margin is what protects the first and last syllables of a sentence, so raise it if words start to sound clipped.
Two further steps can ride along, and both start switched off.
Change the background keeps the person and swaps what is behind for a solid color, a photo or a blur, or leaves the background transparent. If you filmed in front of a green screen, instead turn on Use a green screen: tap the preview to pick the color, then adjust Range and Edge softness. Where the outline goes wrong, a brush lets you paint areas to keep or remove; each stroke applies to the whole clip rather than a single frame.
Play backwards runs the clip from its last frame to its first. Choose Backwards, or Back and forth, which runs back to the first frame and then forward again, so a short piece loops without a jump. Speed is adjustable. The sound plays backwards in step with the image, or can be left out.
Whatever you switch on is applied in the same export as the silence removal, in a fixed order. A transparent background and reverse playback cannot be combined; Tightcut says so on the main screen rather than handing you a file that quietly lost its transparency.
When the export is done, three buttons wait: Save to Photos, Save to Files and Share. The result keeps the frame rate and the resolution your source had.
You pay when you download Tightcut. It carries no recurring charge and no advertising, and it puts no watermark on what you export. Processing stays inside your iPhone and needs no internet connection.
Some limits are worth knowing before you buy. Tightcut does not transcribe speech, write subtitles or captions, or tell speakers apart. Detection is based on loudness alone: a cough counts as sound and a whisper may count as silence, so look over the list before you export. Audio files can have their silence removed, but the background and reverse steps need a picture and are unavailable for audio. Depending on the source format and the steps you choose, the video may be re-encoded, though its frame rate and resolution stay as they were.
