Ouk Chaktrang: Khmer Chess

Cambodian Strategy Board Game

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Cambodia's own chess, made with care. Play the bot at five levels, a friend on one phone, or players online — with boards for Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben and Bon Om Touk. Ouk Chaktrang is the traditional chess of Cambodia — a cousin of Thai Makruk and Indian Chaturanga, with its own pieces, its own opening and the counting rule that decides a long endgame. This app teaches it properly and plays it properly, in Khmer and English. The king is the Sdach. The Neang steps one square diagonally. The Koul moves like a shield. The Trey — the fish — start on the third rank, and the whole opening follows from that. PLAY YOUR WAY • Play the bot at five levels, from Beginner to Master • Two players on one phone — pass and play, no internet needed • Play a friend online with a room code • Match Making finds you a real opponent; if nobody is online, it asks before offering a bot • Watch live games and chat in the lobby LEARN OUK THE RIGHT WAY • Step-by-step lessons for every piece, and for the counting rule most apps get wrong • A new puzzle every day, from quick mates to real endgames • Hints when you are stuck, and a move list to look back on • The history of Ouk, with its sources MAKE IT YOURS • 7 themes, from the Angkor lotus pond to warm heritage wood • 20 boards, including Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben and Bon Om Touk • 12 piece sets • Muted colours made for long games, easy on the eyes SAFE AND FAIR • Bots are always labelled as bots • Chat is filtered in English and Khmer, and any player can be blocked or reported • Chat messages disappear after 24 hours FREE Play without an account — signing in with Apple or Google is optional. Nothing to buy: no paid pieces, no paid boards, no energy to wait for. The game is supported by a single banner ad. Made in Cambodia, for everyone who grew up watching Ouk played on the street.
