A quiet menu bar app for deep work, for tidy screenshots and demos, and for easy evenings. Click the icon to dim; click again to bring the whole screen back.
KEEP ONE THING BRIGHT
Choose whether the whole app in front stays bright, with all of its windows, or only the front window with its sheets and popovers. The shade follows you as you switch apps, move a window or bring another one forward, and fades smoothly rather than flashing.
DIM OR BLUR
Set the depth with a slider, or scroll on the menu bar icon. Wash the background in neutral, warm or cool, or a colour of your own, or blur it so the shapes stay and the words go.
RULES FOR YOUR APPS
Never dim while a video player or a photo editor is in front. Keep two or three apps lit together so moving between them does not move the light. Let small helpers take the focus for a second without anything changing.
EVENINGS
Dim on a schedule, and let the shade lean warm as the evening goes on, fading back before morning.
MORE THAN ONE DISPLAY
Dim the other displays whole, or keep each display's own front window bright.
MADE FOR THE MAC
Add Umbrette to a Focus as a Focus filter and it dims while that Focus is on. Shortcuts actions turn it on, off or over, and set the depth or the style. An optional keyboard shortcut of your choice, and launch at login.
STAYS OUT OF THE WAY
The menu bar, the Dock, Mission Control, menus, notifications and Spotlight are never covered. A full-screen app's own Space is left alone unless you ask. Clicks always go straight through to what is underneath.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Umbrette asks for no permission at all: no Accessibility, no Screen Recording. It reads only the position and size of the windows on screen, never their titles or what is in them. No network access, no account, no tracking.
