It is 1776. Adam Smith has just published The Wealth of Nations, and you are a merchant with £60 and a single wagon on a small island.
Buy corn where it is cheap and sell it where it is dear. Watch prices find their natural level as your trade evens out shortages. Build manufactories and divide the work, and see one worker's output multiply. Cut turnpikes and canals, found a bank, improve an estate. When your house is worth enough, the Crown makes you Chancellor, and you must decide which of the old laws to keep: the corn bounty, the duties on foreign goods, the wine ban, the chartered company.
Every system in the game follows Smith's book:
• The division of labour, limited by the extent of the market
• Natural and market prices, wages, rent and profit
• The corn trade, dearth and famine
• Banks, paper money and credit panics
• Colonies, companies and the mercantile system
• Defence, justice, schools, roads and public debt
Smith himself writes to you as you play, with passages from the book at the moment they matter. Ask him for advice at any time with the quill button.
