Big numbers you can read in sunlight, a gauge that holds the reading by itself, and calculators that talk like a roofer: rise and run, rafter lengths to 1/16 in, squares and bundles.
THE GAUGE (FREE)
- Flat: lay the phone on the roof, or on a level or straightedge across the shingles, any way round.
- Edge: stand the long edge on a rafter, the fascia or a rake board. Leaning it toward you does not change the reading.
- Auto-hold: when the reading is steady the gauge holds it, with a tap you can feel. Or use HOLD and RELEASE.
- The nearest whole pitch in big type (6/12), the exact pitch under it (6.2 / 12, with "between 6 and 7" when it matters), degrees, percent grade and the pitch factor.
- Under every reading: the asphalt-shingle rule from IRC R905.2.2 and a plain steepness category.
- Zero it for your case on a surface you have checked with a level. The screen stays awake while you measure.
MEASURE FROM THE GROUND (FREE)
Can't get up there yet? Sight mode opens the camera with a fixed orange sight line. Hold the phone upright, roll it until the line lies along the rake, and hold. The app corrects for the phone tilting up at the roof, and labels the number Estimate.
PITCH CONVERTER AND TABLE (FREE)
Start from rise over 12, rise and run, degrees, percent, or span and ridge height. Get x/12, degrees, percent, ratio 1:n, rise in mm/m, pitch factor, hip/valley factor and the hip plumb cut. The pitch table runs 1/12 to 24/12, with half pitches and a by-degrees view.
RAFTER CALCULATOR
Pitch, span or run, ridge thickness, horizontal overhang and spacing. Free: run, rise and the common rafter length. Full: tail and total length, plumb and seat cuts with framing-square settings, hip and valley lengths, jack rafter common difference at 16 or 24 in o.c., jack cheek and hip side cuts, compound-saw settings and rafters per side. Feet-inches to 1/16 in, and millimetres.
ROOF AREA AND SHINGLES (FULL)
From the footprint or the area and the pitch, gable or hip: roof area, squares, shingle bundles with waste, underlayment rolls (two layers below 4/12), ridge and hip lengths, cap bundles, drip edge pieces and starter strip. Bundles per square, waste and roll coverage are yours to set.
