RICHTER 3 is a bass synthesizer for the dance floor: 808, reese, wobble, acid, hoover and neuro, with an effects pedalboard and a sequencer in the manner of the TB-303. It works as an app and as an AUv3 instrument in Logic Pro, GarageBand, AUM, Cubasis and any Audio Unit host, on Mac and iPad.
BUILT SO THE LOW END REACHES THE CLUB
• Monophonic voice, like a real bass: legato, glide and return to the key you're still holding.
• A clean sub one or two octaves down that bypasses the filter and the distortion.
• Mono lows below the frequency you choose, with a 48 dB/oct crossover.
• One-knob compressor and soft clipper: the output never goes above 0 dBFS.
THE SYNTH
• Two continuously morphing oscillators (sine, triangle, saw, square) with up to 7-voice unison and FM.
• A 4-pole ladder filter with saturation and self-oscillation: LP24, LP12, band-pass and high-pass.
• Five distortions: warm, hard, wavefold, rectify and bitcrusher.
• PUNCH for the 808 hit, two analogue-style envelopes and a tempo-synced LFO with five destinations.
• Everything runs at 4× the sample rate, so distortion stays clean.
THE PEDALBOARD
• Six slots and ten pedals: chorus, phaser, flanger, delay, reverb, filter, EQ, crusher, overdrive and tremolo.
• Add, remove and drag to reorder. Each pedal has its own envelope, per note or following the level.
• Pedals sit above the low end: the reverb never muddies the sub.
THE ACID SEQUENCER
• Eight 16-step patterns with note, octave, ACCENT, SLIDE and tie.
• Accents open the filter and build up, like the hardware; slides glide the pitch.
• Follows your DAW's bar with swing, or its own clock without a DAW. The keyboard transposes or triggers the pattern.
• Change presets while it plays: the pattern keeps going.
PLATES, AFTERSHOCKS AND THE FLOOR
• Tectonic plates: four sounds in the corners of a map and an epicentre that blends them. Drag it, or let it drift around in time.
• Aftershocks: eight variations of the current sound, from a tremor to a jolt, level-matched. Audition them just by hovering.
• Kick dodge: the bass ducks out of the way when the kick hits, in time or via sidechain, and only in the low end if you like.
• Room check: hear your bass as it will sound in a club, on a phone, a laptop, in a car or on earbuds.
A LABORATORY INSTRUMENT
A 1970s front panel with walnut cheeks: the seismograph writes your bass on paper with P marks on every note and S on every accent, the meter reads the magnitude on the Richter scale… and when the bass hits hard, the panel shakes.
