Pixel Soup is a live wallpaper app for Mac. It makes animated desktop backgrounds and still wallpapers on your Mac, one pixel at a time: pick a shape, pour in a palette, choose how it is dithered, and your desktop becomes a slow, pixel-soft painting nobody else has.
STILL OR GENTLY MOVING
Set a still desktop picture, or let your wallpaper drift slowly behind your icons. Animated wallpapers are drawn by your Mac's graphics chip at a low frame rate, pause when windows cover them and slow down in Low Power Mode, so they are easy on your battery.
TWELVE SHAPES
Flow, Mesh, Plasma, Ripple, Aurora, Cells, Topo, Whorl, Sonar, Mosh, Weave, and your own photo. Every shape is generative, so no two wallpapers are the same.
TEN WAYS TO DITHER
Smooth gradients, Poster, Bayer 4, Bayer 8, Noise, Halftone, Lines, Diamond, ASCII art and Benday dots. Tune the pixel size, colour levels, contrast, grain and vignette for anything from retro 8-bit pixel art to a soft lo-fi gradient.
YOUR COLOURS
Twelve palettes to start with, or mix your own with up to five colours, or pull a palette straight out of a photo.
YOUR PHOTO, DITHERED
Turn any picture into a dithered wallpaper. JPEG, PNG and HEIC all work.
ALWAYS ONE CLICK AWAY
A tiny ladle waits on the edge of your screen. Click it for a new wallpaper, the previous one, or to switch between still and animated. Click again for the full editor.
