A calm word puzzle in English and German: drag letters on the wheel into words, page by page, chapter by chapter. No ads, no subscription, no timer.
Lettern is a calm word puzzle. Drag across a wheel of three to eight letter stones to make words. The words you are looking for fill a small crossword grid, and other valid words earn Dew for hints. No timer, no failing, no ads.
TWO BOOKS: ENGLISH AND GERMAN
• An English book and a German book, each with 640 pages and its own Daily Puzzle. Choose the puzzle language in Settings; each book keeps its own progress.
• The app itself is in English or German, following the language of your iPhone.
WORDS YOU CAN TRUST
• The grid only asks for words people use every day – a base form or a common form like “days” or “carried”, spelled the same in American and British English.
• Other valid words from the word list count as bonus words, in American and British spelling: color and colour, gray and grey. Days, months and languages count too, with their capital letter.
• Names, abbreviations and swear words don’t count.
• After solving, the words appear in their correct spelling. Tap one to look it up – or to note it for a report if something is wrong.
• The word list is public.
A BOOK, NOT A LEVEL COUNT
• 640 pages in 40 chapters. 16 pages make a chapter, each in its own landscape.
• From chapter 3 on, every chapter has a theme – what its landscape shows. The longest word on a page often fits it.
• The last page of every chapter is a Summit: no crossings, short words first, same length in alphabetical order.
• Every finished chapter adds its picture to your portfolio.
A PUZZLE EVERY DAY
• From page 24 there is a Daily Puzzle, the same for everyone on any given day.
• Solved days get a stamp in the calendar. Collect 20 stamps in a month and you earn its Month Print – a landscape picture for your portfolio. A missed day only costs its stamp.
HELP WHEN YOU WANT IT
• Bonus words and solved pages earn Dew, counted in drops. Dew pays for hints: Compass, Binoculars and Signpost reveal letters.
• Dew only comes from playing. It cannot be bought.
FOR DIFFERENT HANDS AND EYES
• Drag, or tap the letters one by one, mirrored for the left hand if you like.
• VoiceOver reads the grid word by word. The text follows your text size, and the letters on the wheel and in the grid can be made larger still.
• Light or dark, as your iPhone is set: every landscape also comes in evening light.
WHAT IT COSTS
The first 48 pages and the Daily Puzzle are free, for good. “The Whole Book” is a one-time purchase that unlocks every page from page 49 in both books, chapters still to come included, and Family Sharing shares it with your family. No ads, no subscription, no other purchases.
Lettern needs no account and no internet connection to play.
The English word data comes from the English Speller Database, Wiktionary, wordfreq and other openly licensed sources; the Lettern word lists are CC BY-SA 4.0. Details are in the app under Settings › Word sources and credits.
