ImpulseDie is a percussion synthesizer that you patch with cables. It is inspired by SOMA Pulsar-23, the hardware semi-modular drum machine.
It works out of the box. With no cables at all, the clock drives the looper, the looper plays the four voices, and the voices go to the mixer and out. Cables are there to change that: let the kick play the bass, the bass bend the snare, or the reverb clock the hi-hat.
NOT A STEP SEQUENCER
The looper records your touch like a tape loop: when you tap, how long you hold, how hard you play. A short tap is a hit, a long press is a held note or a drone. Prefer drawing? The LOOP view turns every voice into a piano roll.
WHAT'S INSIDE
• Four voices: kick, bass, snare and hi-hat
• A 4-bar looper for each voice, with record, mute, play and erase
• Clock with divider, random generator, LFO
• Delay, reverb, distortion and a set of small utility modules
• 122 pins: any output can go to any input. Audio, envelopes, clocks and random steps are all the same kind of signal
• Tape players: load your own audio files from the Files app or iCloud Drive
• 148 factory presets, most with a groove already recorded
• A little noise, drift and bleed, like analog hardware. Turn it down in SETUP if you want it cleaner
• Several skins and colour schemes
TWO PLUG-INS IN ONE APP
• ImpulseDie: the app works on its own, and installs an AUv3 instrument for AUM, GarageBand, Cubasis, Drambo, Loopy Pro, Logic for iPad and other hosts
• ImpulseDie FX: an AUv3 effect that runs the audio of a track through the machine
The app and both plug-ins share the same presets.
MADE FOR TOUCH
• Drag up and down to turn a knob, sideways for fine moves
• Double-tap for the default value, press and hold to type one
• Pads are multi-touch, as on the hardware
• Pinch to zoom the panel up to 2.5×
PLAY IT AND SYNC IT
• Play the voices from a MIDI keyboard; MIDI Learn on every knob
• Follows the tempo and position of your host, or runs free on its own clock
• Undo and redo for every gesture
Same engine and same sound as the desktop version (VST3, AU, AAX).
Landscape only. Designed for iPad; on iPhone the panel is scaled to the screen.
