The whole Hanuman Chalisa in plain English, one verse at a time. 43 verses, text only, no audio.
The Hindi, and the same Hindi in English letters, are optional in Settings. No ads, no account, and it works offline.
Works on iPhone, iPhone Duo and iPad. The page is laid out for each screen.
Open the app and you are on the verse where you stopped. Swipe or tap Next to turn the page. When you reach the end, Back to the Beginning takes you to the first verse in one tap. If you would rather see the whole hymn at once, Read All 43 on One Page puts every verse on a single scroll.
The English is the first thing on every page, and it cannot be switched off, so a page is never empty. Under it, if you want them, come two more things.
- The Hindi in Devanagari, the letters the Hanuman Chalisa was first written in
- The same Hindi words in English letters, so you can say them aloud if you do not read Devanagari
Both are off the first time you open the app. Turn them on in Settings, under Also Show, and the app remembers.
What You Get
All 43 verses: the two opening dohas, the forty chaupais that give the Chalisa its name, and the closing doha. A fixed frame, so only the verse changes when you turn a page and the text always starts at the same height. Today's Verse, for a place to begin. Letters that follow your iPhone's Text Size, up to the largest sizes. Dark mode.
Sharing a Verse
Under every verse, Share sends that verse in English to a friend, with a link to the app on the App Store. The verse is in the message, so your friend can read it right away.
What It Leaves Out
There is no audio. This is a book to read, not a recording to play. There are no ads, no account, no sign-in and no tracking, and the app collects nothing about you. It never asks you for a rating in the middle of a prayer.
Who It Is For
People who know the Hanuman Chalisa by ear and want the words in front of them. People who grew up hearing it and cannot yet read Devanagari. People who want to know what each line says in English. Anyone learning it with a parent or grandparent, one verse at a time.
About the Text
The Hanuman Chalisa is attributed to the poet Tulsidas, who wrote it in the sixteenth century in an old form of Hindi. "Chalisa" comes from chalis, the Hindi word for forty. The Hindi spelling was reconciled against several published editions. The English was written for this app: plain and short, not a scholar's commentary. This is a devotional text, not medical advice, and the app does not promise any result from reciting it.
This is an independent reader. It is not an official temple or priest's app.
