Mumbly is an English shadowing app built on real interviews and conversations.
We pick 1–2 minute clips full of everyday expressions from founder interviews, talks, and conversations, and prepare each one with a script, key expressions, and word meanings. Browse by category on Home, or search by channel, topic, or expression. Long sentences are split into breath-sized phrases, so you can listen to one phrase and say it right back.
■ Start at your level
When you sign up, pick the topics you like, tell us how much you understand, and take a quick word quiz and listening check. Mumbly shows your vocabulary level and listening speed, then starts you on a clip that fits.
■ Practice with the YouTube videos you watch
Paste a YouTube link from + on Home or Shadowing, or tap Share in the YouTube app or Safari and choose Mumbly. Mumbly picks a 1–2 minute clip that's good for shadowing. You can also choose a sentence and get a clip around it. Mumbly writes the script and notes and matches each phrase to the audio, so you can practice in 3–4 minutes. Videos must be spoken in English, and there is a daily limit on how many you can add.
■ Listen and repeat, phrase by phrase
- Four repeat modes: Play once, Repeat all, Repeat phrase, and Phrase by phrase
- Phrase by phrase pauses after each phrase so you have time to say it
- Playback speed 0.7×, 0.8×, 0.9×, 1×
- While playing, double-tap your AirPods for the next phrase and triple-tap for the previous one
■ Notes in simple English
Key expressions and word meanings are explained in plain English. Press and hold a word to see its base form, CEFR level, and meaning. Names of people and companies come with a short note.
■ See the difficulty before you start
Each clip shows its length, word count, and speaking speed (words per minute, WPM). See how many words are new to you and how the speed changes from phrase to phrase before you pick.
■ Words
The words and expressions you hear while shadowing collect in your word list, with how many times you've heard them and their CEFR level. Tap the sentence a word came from to hear just that part again.
■ Stats
See your total practice time, the CEFR levels of the words you've heard, and your average listening speed.
■ Daily reminder
Turn on a practice reminder and Mumbly sends one a day at the time you usually practice. If you've already practiced that day, it doesn't send one.
Mumbly doesn't use the microphone or record your voice. Your practice history is how many times you listened to each phrase and how long you practiced.
Sign in with Apple or Google. You can delete your account anytime in Settings.
Mumbly is also available in Korean and Japanese, with sentence-by-sentence translations.
Videos play in the official YouTube player, and all rights to each video belong to its creator.
