Grasmere 1.3 is for writers and researchers taking a project from idea to finished manuscript. PLAN • Save Web Page: keep a web page's article as a clean Markdown document in your research folder, with where it came from and when you read it. • New Source: look up a book by its ISBN or a paper by its DOI. DRAFT • Citations: type [@ to cite a source. Exports format them in APA, Harvard, Chicago or MLA, with a reference list at the end. • Brainstorm: the new name for New Document with Questions. • Diagrams from Mermaid code blocks, and colour in code blocks. REVIEW • Send a document or a whole book out as Word. Bring your reviewers' copy back with File ▸ Import Review, and every comment and change appears beside its passage to accept or reject. Edits made without Track Changes are found too. • Restore to Before the Review puts everything back if you change your mind. PUBLISH • The Manuscript view: see a book written across many documents as one, reorder its chapters, and export it as a single PDF or Word document. Also: Shortcuts actions, front matter you can edit in the margin, an optional Markdown check, and many smaller fixes.

Grasmere 1.2 takes you back to where you were and is faster and easier to read. STARTS WHERE YOU LEFT OFF Grasmere opens at the document you were on, scrolled as you left it. Opening it again after closing its window brings your project back, not the start screen. RUNBOOKS New Document with Questions can start a runbook. For a procedure (a deploy, an alarm, an onboarding) the questions are the ones a runbook must answer, with a checklist under what must be true first and numbered steps under the steps. FASTER Typing restyles only the paragraph you're in, so long documents keep up with you. The contents scroll smoothly on a project of thousands of documents, and a folder of hundreds opens in half the time. EASIER TO READ Markdown marks, link addresses and small labels are a shade firmer in every theme. Focus mode fades the other paragraphs less. The keyboard's place shows in the Index and the contents, and the interface follows your Mac's Text Size setting. Increase Contrast firms everything up further. ALSO - The Index's caption no longer lets the cards behind it show through. - Go > Today finds today's entry wherever you've moved it, instead of making a second one.

Grasmere 1.1 gives you questions to write from, opens markdown files from anywhere on your Mac, and exports to Word. NEW NOTE WITH QUESTIONS Say what you want to write about, and Apple's on-device model, built into your Mac, writes Socratic questions as the headings of a new note. Nothing leaves your Mac, unless you choose Claude or ChatGPT with your own key. The writing beneath them is yours. ASK A FOLLOW-UP QUESTION While you write, ask the same built-in model for one question about the passage you're on. It appears in the margin, never in your note. MARKDOWN FILES ON YOUR MAC Press Space on a markdown file in Finder to see it in Grasmere's style, and open markdown files in Grasmere, in their project or on their own. EXPORT AS WORD DOCUMENT A note as a .docx, with Word's own styles, pictures and links. ALSO - A link to a note that doesn't exist yet makes the note when you follow it. - Project > Convert Wiki-Links turns [[wiki-links]] into standard markdown links, with undo. - Familiar shortcuts: Command-O opens a note by name, Command-P exports a PDF, Option-Command-1 to 3 make headings and Option-Command-Q a quote. - The clipboard card only offers what you copied recently, and goes away by itself. AND ONE MORE THING, FOR THE CURIOUS Writing Replay, an experiment: record how a note is written and play it back, what was typed, what was pasted, and when. Each checkpoint is timestamped by a public service, so the record can be checked, and the replay can be exported as a web page to share. Off until you turn it on in Settings.
