Kansai-ben of the Day brings you one phrase a day from Osaka and the Kansai region of Japan, from the polite to the downright rude.

EVERY PHRASE COMES WITH
• its kana reading and its standard-Japanese equivalent
• its meaning, in plain words
• an everyday example and a line from a yakuza movie, each with its translation
• a note on who says it, how rough it is, and when not to say it
HOW ROUGH?
Every phrase wears a label: Polite (fine with customers and strangers), Casual (friends and family), Rough (close friends only), or Rude (picking a fight). Settings can keep the rougher ones out of the phrase of the day; they stay in the list.
HEAR IT
Speak reads the phrase and its examples in your device's best Japanese voice. The voices speak standard Tokyo Japanese, so the Kansai lilt isn't quite there.
