New: each person's own progress, the settling-in weeks and residence days. Every step of your move in order. Free for 9 days; launch price until December 31.
Rootstep works for every move, anywhere: across town or across the world, on your own or with children, pets and a car. Tell it where you are leaving from, where you are going and when, and it builds your plan: every step in the right order, each with a date counted from your moving day.
What Rootstep does
• Today shows what comes next. Mark steps done as you go; a step for each person, pet or vehicle keeps a status for each of them.
• The plan covers deciding, leaving, the journey and settling in: visas, documents, work, money, health care, schools, pets, the car and your mail. The Settling view groups what follows arrival by day 30, 60, 90 and 180.
• Reminders before each date, with quiet hours you choose, and your dates in your calendar if you like.
• Documents: passports, certificates and permits with their expiry dates, which originals, certified copies, apostilles and translations you hold, and scans locked with Face ID or Touch ID.
• Boxes: number every box, list what goes in it, mark it fragile or open first, and print labels with a QR code any phone camera can read.
• Budget: costs in any currency at the European Central Bank's daily rates, movers' quotes compared, receipts kept, and a reminder before each bill's pay-by day.
• Residence days: note your trips and count your days present since arrival, next to a limit you read on the official page.
• Contacts: movers, landlords, offices and schools, each linked to its steps, and the emergency numbers for your route.
• Moving day: an hour-by-hour list for leaving and arriving, on your Lock Screen as the day goes.
• The assistant answers questions from your own plan (written answers need Apple Intelligence), and the letter helper reads a letter in another language, finds its dates and translates it.
• Plan together: share a move with your family through iCloud, give each step to someone and comment on it. Share your plan as a template, without anything personal.
• On iPad, a step, document or box opens beside its list, with keyboard shortcuts.
• Widgets for the Home and Lock Screens, an Apple Watch app, a Control Center control, Siri shortcuts, and as many moves as you plan.
What Rootstep is not
Rootstep is a planning guide. It is not a government service, it is not connected to any authority, and it is not legal advice. Rules differ from place to place and they change. Rootstep lists the official page for a step with a local rule where it has one; you read the rule there and set the deadline yourself. If you paste the sentence your deadline rests on, Rootstep checks that page once a week and tells you if the sentence is gone; nothing in your plan changes until you confirm. Where no page is listed, the step asks you to check locally, and you can add the official page yourself. The office concerned always has the last word.
Free, and one payment for the rest
Try everything free for 9 days, without payment details. After that, this stays free for good:
• your whole plan, to view and mark done
• every reminder already set
• the plan as a PDF
• the budget and receipts
• your contacts
• each box's status, the moving-day list and comments
The Move Pass is one payment, not a subscription. It unlocks editing the plan, your own tasks, planning with your family, calendar sync, the assistant with its letter helper, route setup, documents, boxes and labels, printing, residence days and further moves, and it is shared with your family through Family Sharing.
Private by design
No account, no ads, no analytics, and no servers of ours: your plan stays on your iPhone or iPad and in your own iCloud. Rootstep goes online only for iCloud, for the official pages you ask it to read or it checks weekly (a switch in Settings), and for the daily currency rates (another switch).
For everyone
Made for VoiceOver, Voice Control and every text size, light and dark. Color is never the only signal; Increase Contrast, Differentiate Without Color and Reduce Motion change the drawing.
Ratings & Reviews

Rootstep 1.1 follows you into the settling-in weeks and gives each person in the household their own progress.
• Steps that repeat per person, pet or vehicle now keep a status for each of them: mark your own done and the step stays open for the others.
• Settling: a fourth view of the Plan groups what comes after arrival by the first week and by day 30, 60, 90 and 180.
• Residence days: note your trips and see the days you have been present since arrival, this calendar year, in the last 12 months and in the last 180 days, next to a limit you read on the official page (Move details).
• Quotes and payment days: compare movers’ quotes in Budget, choose one as the plan for its category, and give any expense a day to pay by; Rootstep reminds you three days before and on the day.
• Share your plan as a template file: phases and steps with their timing, nothing personal; anyone with Rootstep opens it and picks the steps to add.
• Move details says how many of your route’s steps have an official page listed, and Today’s deadlines card how many of the deadlines coming up have theirs.
• A document that runs out is also brought to mind on its last day.
• Small fixes throughout.
