iPhone
Aim, tap the spot, and get an exposure for any manual film camera. Place shadows and highlights with the zone system, and correct for bellows and reciprocity.
Film Spot Meter turns your iPhone into a reflected-light spot meter for film photography. Aim at the part of the scene that matters, tap it, and get an exposure you can set on any manual camera, from a 35mm rangefinder to a large-format view camera.
PICK WHAT YOU KNOW
• Set aperture: turn the film ISO and f-stop wheels and get the shutter time.
• Set shutter: turn the ISO and shutter wheels and get the aperture, to the nearest third stop with the exact value beside it.
• Long exposures are shown exactly, such as 1m 47s, so you can time them by hand.
A REAL SPOT METER
• Tap anywhere in the viewfinder to meter just that spot, not the whole scene.
• Readings in EV at ISO 100, in third stops.
• Hold locks the reading so you can lower the phone and set your camera.
• Calibrate against a meter you trust, and the offset is saved.
• Manual EV mode for when you already know the light level.
THE ZONE SYSTEM
• Place any reading on any zone, from 0 to X.
• Record the shadow you want detail in and the highlight you want texture in. The exposure is set from the shadow, and a zone scale shows where everything will print.
• See the brightness range in stops and get development advice: N, N+1, N−1 and beyond.
• Zone view colours the live viewfinder by zone, so you can see at a glance where shadows and highlights will fall.
BELLOWS EXTENSION
• Enter the focal length and bellows draw for the exposure factor, stops and magnification. Ideal for macro and large-format work.
RECIPROCITY FAILURE
• Long-exposure corrections for Ilford Pan F+, FP4+, HP5+, Delta 100, Delta 400, Delta 3200, SFX and XP2, Kodak Tri-X, T-Max 100 and T-Max 400, and Fujifilm Acros II, or enter your own exponent.
• Corrections are applied in order (metered, then bellows, then reciprocity), and every step is shown, so you can see exactly where the extra time comes from.
SIMPLE AND PRIVATE
• Switch off the features you don’t use and they fold away.
• Built-in help explains every feature.
• No account, no ads, no tracking. The camera is used only to measure light, and no photos are ever taken or saved.
A phone camera isn’t a calibrated light meter, so check Film Spot Meter against a meter you trust before relying on it for important work.
