Skavl plans ski tours in Norway and Switzerland. Tap where you start and where you want to go, often a summit, and Skavl lays a skin track across the real terrain. The route stays within your limits for steepness and avalanche terrain, takes the line that costs the least effort, and tells you exactly where it had to go beyond them. ROUTES THAT RESPECT YOUR LIMITS • Set a maximum slope and how much avalanche terrain you accept, from "avoid all avalanche terrain" to "allow release areas". ATES-style presets (simple, challenging, complex, extreme). • Avalanche terrain from NVE: release areas (NAKSIN 2023) and runout zones (Bratthet med utløp 2024). • Today's Varsom avalanche forecast makes slopes with the problem aspects and elevations costlier to cross. • Follows known ski-touring tracks from OpenStreetMap when the detour is small, and starts from the nearest car park. • When no route fits, Skavl tells you why and what it would take. Apply the fix with one tap. • Elevation profile, distance, ascent, time estimate (Munter), kick turns and how much of the route is in avalanche terrain. CONDITIONS WHERE YOU ARE GOING • Avalanche forecast and recent snow and avalanche observations from regObs, along the route too. • Snow depth, new snow and ski conditions from seNorge, and a map layer showing the chance of powder. • Webcams from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and windy.com, so you see the snow at the trailhead. • Winter-closed roads and car parks that are not ploughed, so you know if you can drive there. • MET Norway weather for the goal, and the driving time from home. SEE THE TERRAIN • 3D view of the mountain with your route and today's snow cover. • AR: hold up your phone and see the names of the peaks in the camera view. • Overlays for slope, runout zones, release areas and AutoKAST over Kartverket's topographic maps. ON THE TOUR • Start trip: Skavl records your GPS track, with the screen off too, and saves it to the plan. • Save the area around a route for offline use, the map and the 3D view, for places with no coverage. • Export the route as GPX for your watch or another app. PLAN TOGETHER • Save routes as plans with the day's weather, snow and avalanche forecast. • Share the trip as a link. Friends tap "I'm in" without an account, and everyone who is in gets a morning alert if the avalanche forecast has got worse. ASSISTANT (OPTIONAL) Ask in plain language, e.g. "Where should I ski tomorrow around Åndalsnes? Max 30°, no avalanche terrain". The assistant reads the forecast, finds known tours, plans each candidate with the same router, checks observations along the line and explains its pick. It never calls a route safe, always links the full forecast and never loosens your limits on its own. The assistant uses Claude by Anthropic. Without an account you can ask a few questions a day. OPEN DATA Maps and data from Kartverket, NVE, Varsom and regObs, MET Norway, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and OpenStreetMap. Routes are computed on your phone. The planner has no ads and no analytics, and needs no account. SAFETY Skavl is a planning aid, not a safety guarantee. The avalanche data are models: they cannot see the snowpack, wind loading, cornices, crevasses or thin ice. A route that avoids mapped avalanche terrain is not a safe route. Always read the full forecast on varsom.no, assess conditions in the field, carry avalanche rescue gear, and turn back when in doubt. Routing covers mainland Norway and Switzerland. In Switzerland Skavl uses swisstopo maps and ski routes, the SLF avalanche bulletin and MeteoSwiss snow data.
