For anyone who has ever come out of a subway exit and turned the
wrong way.
Direction Sense is a short daily drill for the part of navigation that
maps cannot teach: knowing, without stopping to think, which way you
are facing and which side your destination falls on. A session puts you
on a small drawn street corner and asks one question — you are facing
this way, so what is on your left? You answer with your own body, not
with the compass printed on the screen.
After a couple of weeks the questions stop feeling like questions. That
is the whole point. The app keeps every answer and every reaction time,
and when something goes wrong it shows you the shape of the mistake:
the map quietly turned in your head, or the compass points and your
hands swapped places. Once an error has a name, it stops coming back.
The later drills borrow the sun and the landmarks you already walk past
every day, so the habit leaves the screen with you.
