Graph functions, get exact answers and see the steps behind derivatives and integrals. Everything runs on your Mac, and you buy it once, without a subscription.
PocketCAS is a graphing calculator and computer algebra system for your Mac. It graphs your functions, gives exact answers and shows the steps behind derivatives and integrals. Everything runs on your Mac, so it works without internet or an account, and you buy it once instead of paying for a subscription.
Graphs
- 2D plots of functions, implicit equations, polar and parametric curves, run charts and vector fields. PocketCAS marks zeros, extrema and intersections. Rest the pointer on a mark to read its coordinates.
- 3D surfaces and space curves with soft light and shading. Turn them with the mouse or trackpad, add a floor grid or pick another color map.
- Open a plot in its own window and keep it next to your document.
- Animated plots: use the variable anim in any plot.
Suggestions and steps
- Under each function, suggestions show what to look at next: its derivative, zeros, extrema, integral or a plot. The answer is already in the suggestion. Click it to add it to your document.
- Functions get a small plot right beside the result.
- Calculation steps show the rules behind a derivative, an integral, a differential equation or an extremum, one row per rule.
Exact answers
- Algebra: solve equations and systems, simplify, expand and factor expressions, divide polynomials.
- Calculus: limits, derivatives, integrals, Taylor series and sums.
- Linear algebra: matrices, determinants, inverses, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
- Differential equations: ordinary differential equations, solved exactly.
- Units and constants: enter physical formulas with units and convert the results.
- Scripts: define your own functions with conditions, loops and recursion.
Reads like your textbook
- Results look the way they do in a textbook: fractions, roots, sums, integrals and matrices. Long results wrap to the width of your window.
- Type math as you know it, or pick functions from the math keyboard and the function list. A hint shows what goes between the brackets.
Made for daily work
- Documents keep your calculations and plots together, so you can pick up where you left off.
- iCloud syncs your documents between Mac, iPhone and iPad. The iPhone and iPad app is a separate purchase.
- Export: print or share plots, entries or whole documents as PDF.
- Import: reuse functions from other documents, or load data from CSV files.
- Help built in: the reference explains every function with examples, and tutorials get you started.

Best CAS for Apple devices with iCloud and even Handoff
Tiefstoesse
I use an HP Prime Graphing Calculator and this app is the best alternative, or maybe even an upgrade, for its CAS function. They use the same kernel known as Xcas.Though HP provides a completely free emulator for computers (25 bucks for iOS), it's frustrating to navigate through formulas in an 'exactly emulated' window with a 320*240 resolution. Besides, I'm happy to find this app supports more 3D graphing functionalities than HP Prime. Such as 3D parametric plots, lines, planes... and even animated plots!I've also tried the app from Xcas website, only finding it's not updated and maintained for newer macOS versions for a long time. And to be honest, the original Xcas app is really hard to use.An added bonus is that this app supports the Handoff function. It conveniently pops up on the dock of my Mac, and with just one click, I can seamlessly transition it onto my big screen.Don't hesitate to get it! Totally worth the 50 bucks for all your Apple devices!
Frustrating
travlin hoosier
I have experience with Mathematica and a little with Maple (admittedly some few years ago) and I have been trying to do some modest computations and a presentation with PocketCAS. It has been extremely frustrating. The documentation for how this program works is extremely limited; well-written, extensive documentation might solve problems like mine but I've looked and not found it. A few simple examples do not suffice. A supremely detailed manual for the parent CAS, from which this seems to be an extremely limited and, to be honest, messed-up copy, is only frustrating.I emailed the author once with no reply. I can find no forum where one might go to get questions answered. I sincerely wish Macs had a reasonably priced alternative to Mathematica or Maple which could just be bought and installed. I hoped it was PocketCAS but as of now, for me, it is assuredly not.I would have graded this lower based on my experience but in deference to those who have found it useful, I did not.

Hi, we definitely reply to all support requests for PocketCAS. Would you mind reaching out again (possibly referring to your previous inquiries, so we can check what happened to those), so we can help you with any specific questions you might have?
Scripts for maximum extensibility

This has allowed me to derive and test solutions for computer algorithms. The greatest thing about this program is scripting. If a function doesn’t exist, you can create it using an already large set of functions. Such a great tool for price. I would like a full reference manual. It has so many functions, most are described in examples and manual. I seem to keep finding built in syntax that I cannot find out how to use.

Hi, thank you for the great review! I feel you with constantly finding new things. Maybe https://pocketcas.com/reference can help a bit. And if you have any questions, also feel free to contact us via the built-in support function at any time :-) Best, Daniel Alm
Great app and companion to the iOS app!

I downloaded the iOS app while I was away from home and had forgotten my calculator and fell in love immediately. As soon as I got back I made sure to grab the Mac version as well. It’s convenient that I can use either one and pick up right where I left off with iCloud integration. I highly recommend both of these apps!

Hi,Thank you for the feedback! We have just released PocketCAS 3.10.3, which increases the graph size for wider document windows. And to quickly create a new entry, simply press the Cmd-+ shortcut, which should be even faster than double-clicking the end of the table.Would you mind updating your review accordingly? :-)Thanks,Daniel from PocketCAS
This update explains results without a value, makes large numbers easier to read and fixes a number of smaller things.
New in version 2026.2.1:
- When a calculation has no value, PocketCAS now says why instead of showing [ ] or undef: No real solution, No solution found, Undefined, Diverges, No limit or Unknown function, with a short reason below. A suggestion offers the next step, such as the complex solutions, the limits from the left and right, or a plot.
- PocketCAS marks a typing error in the input, and a suggestion offers the fix: sin x becomes sin(x), and intergrate becomes integrate. A stopped calculation shows how long it ran and offers Calculate Again.
- Next to an exact result, the ≈ line now also shows the decimal value of a result with units and of an integral without an exact value. Very large and very small numbers read as 2.43 × 10¹⁸ instead of 2.43E+18.
- When rounding changed a decimal result, the suggestion Exactly shows the exact value.
- Results and inputs show large numbers in groups of three digits, such as 1 234 567. Settings > Digit Grouping offers another separator, or none. The editor and copied text keep plain digits, and a number too long for the window continues on the next line.
- The Extrema suggestion now finds minima that it missed before, such as the one of abs(x) at 0.
- Clearer calculation steps for some integrals and for extrema, and a step that is too wide for the window continues on the next line.
- Plot Settings show a curve's color even when it is not in the list, as Custom Color.
- VoiceOver reads ( and ) as parentheses instead of braces.
- Clearer German and French texts, and a suggestion now adds just its calculation, without a comment line above it.
- The previous version of PocketCAS still opens your documents. It shows the new reasons as plain text next to the result.
Changes from version 2026.1:
- Suggestions under your results: the derivative, zeros, extrema and more, with the answers already shown. Click one to add it to your document. Settings > Suggestions turns them off or shows them only under the newest result.
- A small plot appears next to a function's result. Click it to add the plot.
- Calculation steps show how PocketCAS works out derivatives, integrals and a few other calculations.
- Results look like a math textbook, and long results wrap to the width of the screen.
- Clearer 2D plots with a finer grid, and 3D surfaces with soft light, shading and a floor grid. Rest the pointer on a mark to read it.
- A plot can open in its own window.
- Vector field plots: enter [f(x,y), g(x,y)] in a plot.
- A new look for the keyboard panel, with one key per function.
- On macOS 26 and later, PocketCAS uses Apple's new design, Liquid Glass, and has a new icon.
- Brackets close by themselves, and printed documents break long lines at the page's width.
- Plots now use seven curve colors, so a 7th or later curve in an older document may get a new color.
