ALWAYS READY WHEN YOU ARE - COMPUTER OPPONENT
Whether in the middle of the night or during your coffee break, your computer is always ready for a match. Choose from three difficulty levels to suit your skill level. For those who want to play only the best, a world-class artificial intelligence opponent is available as an in-app purchase. Casual play or competitive match? True Backgammon has an opponent for you that is fun to play with or that is a teeth grinding challenge.
PLAY WITH PEOPLE NEAR YOU - GAME BOARD MODE
Imagine you are with friends and want to pass the time with a game? Or are you on the train playing against the computer and one of your fellow commuters turns out to be a backgammon player too? You don't need to carry around a real board with you all the time. Instead, True Backgammon is your board.
CONNECT WITH FRIENDS OR PLAY AGAINST RANDOM OPPONENTS ONLINE - GAME CENTER
Would you rather play against a human than an AI, but there is no opponent in sight? Join the growing community of people playing True Backgammon online every day on an iPad, iPhone, iPod, iMac or MacBook. There's always someone ready to play. And not only can you play with them, you can talk to them using the built-in voice chat.
BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER - GAME BOARDS
We didn't just want to make good AI and smooth gameplay, we also wanted to make it look good. No, not just good... we wanted them to look drop dead gorgeous. We found a skilled designer and then tortured him with feedback until we were satisfied. The result is two boards (metal and wood) that look awesome, while offering little visual distraction to keep you focused on your strategy. And for those who love a little distraction, we let the designer run wild with a selection of (optional) fancy boards, rich in decoration and beautiful detail. Which is your favourite?
AAAND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOARD, A MULTI-OLYMPIC CHAMPION AI - BEEE GEEEE BLITZ
From time to time there is an Olympic tournament for backgammon programs. We have persuaded the creator of the three-time winner BGBlitz to make his AI available to True Backgammon users. This AI is a world class opponent for those who want to play only the best. And it is a patient tutor. BGBlitz offers a tutor mode that will point out moves that are not optimal and show you better ones. It also gives you statistics, and you can export your current game to the common SGF format to analyse it with other applications like XG2, BGBlitz or gnuBG.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE SAY?
To cut a long story short, we have put a lot of effort into this application, not only in the gameplay, but on every level. If you choose it, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

game is okay

Play it for yourself and draw your own conclusions. I tend to agree with those who experience frustration with favourable rolls at opportune times from the computer player. It can get annoying when you have played a sound game. Sure you are playing a computer who will make the right move most of the time but when you dominate a game and still lose at the end due to a ridiculously lucky roll or terrible roll combinations forcing you into a vulnerable position, which happens all too frequently, there is something going on... No human player would be that consistently lucky. I have played this game 100's of times before coming to my conclusions. It is still better than most with good graphics. I have thought at times that the computer player comes off as one who cannot stand getting beat so needs to cheat in the end. LOL. I have read the developers comments to similar claims from others. Again, don't take my word for it, draw your own conclusions.
Lives up to its name! (And stop complaining about the dice.)
The Hired Man
I'm updating this review, which I wrote a couple of years ago. I can tell you, based on playing this game for way too many hours, that there's no problem with the algorithm, which generates truly random dice rolls. The problem is human nature: we notice only the headwinds. Sure, there are a lot of games where I curse the computer. But there are just as many games where, if the computer could talk, it would complain at my luck or accuse me of stacking the dice.As I wrote previously, Backgammon lovers will love this game. I have a beautiful leather backgammon table, so I sprang for the "leather" board design option. Feels almost like the real thing. And the reviews complaining that the dice are rigged are nonsense. Sometimes the computer wins; sometimes I win. And yes, sometimes, it feels like my opponent is rolling doubles way too often, just as it feels like my lane is always slower than the lanes around me in a traffic jam. Finally, I really appreciate the developer's responsiveness to my queries and his commitment to making True Backgammon the best computer backgammon out there.

Thank you very much for your warm review. You made my day :)
Best Computer Backgammon I have found for Mac.

I have used a lot of versions of computer backgammon and found this one approximates the experience playing with a human most closely. I appreciate the developer's willingness to explain and defend this game. I have used all the available AIs. I have found the AIs provided the best and the dice rolling the most random of all other Backgammon programs. Though like this app very much, I have attempted to check the equity (word used as pre-woke era) of the AI and random number generator. I have used the suggested way of checking future rolls to verify fairness of the algorithms. I found the dice rolls seemed more random if I used the “create new dice” button after each roll.I also found that using the Dice option “Roll your own” I routinely won more games. I am not sure what to make of this rather than randomness is increased with this mode.I think it would be great for the developer to add an option for the player to actually designate "end turn" so play can move forward. I have had some long matches ruined by the program moving forward when the pieces were not placed exactly the way I had planned.
"Advanced" is not very advanced

The computer makes the right decision for every move based on every roll but it is terrible at using the doubling cube. Thanks for this reply: "Sounds like you are a really good player. I would highly recommend you the BGBlitz AI engine, which is one of the best Backgammon AI's in the world. It can be purchased in the inappstore of the app. Press the small shopping cart symbol inside the button in the left menu, where you can set the AI level to enter the store." --- I agree. I have this version on my iPad and it is the best BG game available in my opinion. I thought I was buying the same thing for my MacBook Air but I got this instead. I cannot find the BGBlitz version for MacBook and I tried a few times. Anyway, great product... I just read all of the negative reviews about unfair dice, oh my. THE ROLLS ARE LEGITIMATE for sure. Mediocre players always blame the dice, even in real life games. BG is not a game of luck.
Developer Response
I'm sorry, but the version for iOS and macOS are unfortunately different apps, which means that you would need to purchase BGBlitz for macOS again. Meanwhile it would be possible to create an app which is the same for iOS and macOS, which was not possible when True Backgammon was initially developed, but doing this now would disconnect all existing macOS users from updates, which is something I do not want to do. Thank you for your understanding.
* Resigning a game now only offers useful options based on match points, cube value and board situation
* The network game protocol has changed, so you will need at least v6.30 to connect through GameCenter
* The sgf file now contains further comments on dice generation and cube decisions
* Optimized for macOS 26.5
If you like this app and want to support its development, please rate it 5 stars, or even better, write a nice review. I appreciate your support.
