After several tests including low level or multi-threaded file searches the conclusion is that the current implementation is doing the job pretty well. Yet analyzing the disk can be slow and the only factor is the number of files! So it can be a good tip to exclude some specific folders containing a lot of small files by adding it to the ignore list. Typical example could be the Applications and Library folders if you are only interested in mapping your own files, such as pictures, music or videos.
