SkunkTracker displays live, updating maps of ships and boats. It uses AIS data streams from your own dedicated AIS receivers or from network feeds. If you like, you can share your data with services like AIS Hub and Marine Traffic.
AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponders are carried by all large ships, all passenger vessels, and many recreational and small commercial boats.
Note: you need an AIS radio, or access to a public AIS feed, to use SkunkTracker. Your radio can be connected via USB, Bluetooth, WiFi, wired Ethernet, or a USB-serial converter. SkunkTracker can connect to installed marine transponders, to some multifunction displays/chartplotters, to a NMEA 2000 gateway like the Yacht Devices YDWG-02, and to low cost recreational grade receive-only AIS radios.
If your radio has a serial port, but doesn't have a network connection or USB connection, you'll need some sort of RS232 converter. You can use an WiFi-RS232 converter, such as the Global Cache WF2SL or the GridConnect RN370; a Bluetooth Classic converter like the IOGear GBC232A; or a serial-to-ethernet converter like the GridConnect ATC-1000.

I run an AIS shore station (receiver) for the MarineTraffic network… How do I setup my Comtrend receiver with SkunkTracker? It does have WIFI capability, which is how I have it connected to my home network. Please let me know how to set this up? I'll update review to 5 stars once this can be sorted out... Thank you!

I can't find any reference to a Comtrend AIS receiver; all I can find is their routers. Could you please share the exact model number for your receiver, and even better a link to the user manual?In general, what you'll do is figure out the IP address of your receiver (it will look something like 192.168.2.5) and the port number. Create a new Data Source in the Preferences panel. and configure the new data source as "Network connection".If you are perhaps using the Marine Traffic SLR350Ni, which looks to be a Comar device, then I believe (from https://help.marinetraffic.com/hc/en-us/articles/205327217-AIS-Receivers-Manuals) that it uses port 5320 to provide the AIS data stream.

I thought this would allow me to track vessels with incoming freight.Unless you have the required receives you will not get anything.

That's correct. As mentioned in the app description, an external AIS radio, or a data feed from AISHub.net or similar data sharing services, is required.
