Explore the sound and letter-pattern skills used in reading with the Online Reading Tutor (ORT) screener. A parent or legal guardian can guide a child through the activities, and adults can screen themselves. In about 5 to 10 minutes, listen to sounds, choose matching letter patterns and view a summary of reading accuracy.
ORT's approach focuses on decoding: connecting letters and letter patterns with their sounds. Its separate reading program uses Orton-Gillingham-based activities to practise these skills, with the goal of making decoding more automatic so readers can give more attention to understanding what they read. This app provides the screener; it does not include the reading program.
Before screening, the app presents a data collection notice and asks for permission to process the answers and results. Before results are shown, it requires contact details and asks you to choose how ORT may follow up. You can choose email without a call. A follow-up may explain the results and discuss ORT's separate reading program.

I was crying and frustrated today that I couldn’t teach my 12 year old to read like I did my other children. I was Feeling like an absolute failure and lost that I couldn’t figure out the issue. Taking this quiz with my son just out of curiosity and reading the results helped me understand clearly what his reading struggles are. Knowing that there is a place available for him to learn the skills required to read and a place for me to ask for help and direction on how to move forward to help him and that the program has monitored programs helps me feel peace that my sons situation isn’t a lost cause. My child has been struggling to read for the past two years. I began to seek additional help and stumbled upon this program. My daughter took the assessment and it became very clear that dyslexia was most likely the cause of her struggle with reading. I am happy to have found a program that can work with my child as well as our busy schedule. I found the non word decoding very challenging. My son struggles to read and I had him take the assessment also to compare. I feel it truly rested his ability to decode vs just test his knowledge of sight words. I’ve read that it is very important in helping dyslexics improve their fluency.
