JSON Query is a native macOS app for working with JSON files faster. Import, organize, inspect, format, query, and export JSON without leaving your Mac.
Use built-in jq to filter and reshape data, or describe what you want in plain English and let JSON Query generate the jq filter for you. It is built for real JSON workflows: large files, repeated queries, schema generation, backups, and quick document organization.
Key Features
- Import and organize JSON files into categories
- Run powerful built-in jq queries on your data
- Generate jq filters from plain English
- Reuse query history across JSON files with the same schema
- Pretty print, compact, export, and generate JSON Schema
JSON Query is ideal for developers, data analysts, QA engineers, API testers, and anyone who regularly needs to inspect or transform JSON. Whether you are exploring API responses, cleaning exported data, checking nested fields, or learning jq, JSON Query gives you a focused desktop workspace for JSON.
Privacy
Your JSON documents are stored locally on your Mac. Plain-English query generation requires an internet connection and sends your natural-language request plus an automatically generated schema of your JSON structure. The full JSON data is not sent for query generation.

The absolute best JSON reader

It’s not close, this is the most seamless JSON querying experience I have come across on the mac. Cannot recommend this utility enough.
Good idea, but has data loss bugs
blue balloon
I was really excited when I found this app. It has some showstopping flaws, though. First, it doesn't attempt any validation. If you paste something that isn't valid JSON, there are no errors or warnings issued but none of the features work. Second, the multi-window support is severely broken: buttons like Pretty Print, Compact, and Clear JSON affect all windows(!!!). Third, the Undo functionality doesn't undo Clear JSON. So, if you're like me and have many windows open with various objects and need to clear one, they will all be wiped. I just lost a lot of work to these bugs - clearly I've become too accustomed to other apps and editors which place a high priority on avoiding data loss.
Latest version is not usable for testing JSON queries
Chris_in_Eugene
I had been using this tool to query data endpoints for JSON responses, so I could verify data that was being returned. The latest versions, 3 and 4, do not support this, or at least I can’t tell if it does, because I can’t make it work like that.It is good if you already have JSON data to be worked with, but trying to retrieve JSON data from a URI just doesn’t work anymore. So, it is no longer JSON Query, more like JSON Sort, or JSON Analysis, but the query part isn’t there anymore.
Great Productivity Tool
