more I love this app. It has all the podcasting 2.0 features and uses native components which looks and feels very polished. There is one downside, when playing on Bluetooth in the car, if you turn off the car while playing a podcast (without pausing it beforehand) there is a chance that the app will get confused and loose your place. Next time the app starts up the podcast starts from the beginning! If this can be fixed the app would be perfect!Update: thank you for for the developer response! Unfortunately I am still having this issue, I had it on my old car stereo system and still have this issue on the new one which is CarPlay enabled. Let me know if there is any way I can send detailed debug data somehow to help track this down.
Developer Response Hello Andrei. I implemented some fixes that should correct the issue you were experiencing with playing position getting lost. Let me know if you still have the same problem.

Castamatic has all of the features one would expect from a modern podcast player, presented in a very well organized, easy-to-use interface. The user experience is brilliant compared to many other players which have become almost hopelessly convoluted. When I discovered that sideloaded files also synced across devices, Castamatic even replaced my audiobook app.The app subscription model is something I’m still getting used to, especially since multiple subscriptions add up very quickly, and Castamatic is certainly on the higher end for an app with no obvious services or storage being provided. That being said, as long as Castamatic is under continuous development the current asking price is reasonable. My personal wishlist for Castamatic would be ‘End of Chapter’ and ‘End of Episode’ options for the sleep timer, as well as a time-based limit for News Mode, as opposed to episode count.

I’ve been hunting for the “perfect” podcast app and, imho, this comes the closest of anything on the market. It has pretty much everything you’d want in terms of sound boost, silence trimming, timed skipping of intros/outros, customizable global defaults w/the ability to save custom settings for each show, and no real ads – just a minimally invasive banner in the episode list promoting the premium version. The only (minor) quibble that I have is that the playback speed setting changes in 0.25x increments; a bit more granularity would be appreciated. Yes, you can subscribe for ten bucks a year to support the dev, but all the above features are available for free. Give it a shot, it’s an excellent app.

Heard about the app, read the No Ads, No Tacking… decided to try the app. First thing you notice is banners. Can be removed…for a subscription. So much for the No Ads, at least I see a banner that can be removed as an ad. Not a terrible subscription at 9.99 a year, but I’m sticking with a cleaner interface app that doesn’t force a subscription to look clean. Worth a try though if you can get past the, well, ads, or perhaps call them reminders your not a subscriber. Just not for me.I appreciate the Dev response here. I suppose it all come down to perception. I see a banner reminding you to subscribe to a product as an ad. The developer does not. I can see the their point of view as well. This app is a fantastic app, that banner just ruins it for me. I believe many will love it though and I wish the developer well. Who knows, one day I may try it out again.
Developer Response I confirm there are no ads in Castamatic. If the user is not subscribed there is a banner that remembers the user he can subscribe to Castamatic premium to support developement.

Version 13.2.9
- After a tap on a chapter or on a line of the transcript, the app could later resume the episode from that point instead of from the last position, or lose a few minutes of progress if it closed. Sometimes a tap on an earlier chapter did not move playback at all. Chapters and transcript now start exactly at the chosen point, and the listening position is kept.
13.2.9 2d ago
Version 13.2.8
- If the network dropped while streaming, the episode stayed stuck. Playback now resumes by itself as soon as the phone is back online.
- Skipping back or changing the speed in the first seconds of a streamed episode could show the "Can't play this episode" error. The episode now starts at the chosen point.
- Some streamed episodes never started, or started only when fully downloaded. They now start right away.
- To look for chapters, the app downloaded part of the audio file again at each play, even for downloaded episodes. With some podcasts that was several megabytes each time, often on cellular. It now does it only once.
- More diagnostic information to find why the app sometimes closed while audio played in the background.
13.2.8 Oct 1
Version 13.2.7
- On iPad and Mac the player left a large empty space between the episode title, the podcast name and the date, and no longer showed the start of the episode notes. The three lines stay together again and the notes are back.
- Sometimes the app closed by itself while audio played in the background. The cause is not clear yet: this version adds the diagnostic information needed to find it.
13.2.7 Sep 22
Version 13.2.6
- On iPad and Mac the player left a large empty space between the episode title, the podcast name and the date, and no longer showed the start of the episode notes. The three lines stay together again and the notes are back.
13.2.6 Sep 21
Version 13.2.5
- On iOS 27 the player could open already scrolled down to the episode notes, with the playback controls hidden; it happened at random, more often with episodes that have short notes. It now always opens on the artwork.
13.2.5 Sep 17
Version 13.2.4
- Episodes whose identifier starts with an underscore, typical of feeds generated from YouTube channels, could not sync their listening position with iCloud: every attempt failed and sync reported an error. They now sync.
- An episode iCloud refuses no longer blocks the sync of the other episodes in the same batch, which used to be sent again on every pass.
- If the app quit unexpectedly at launch while restoring the last played episode, for example because of a malformed transcript, it could happen at every launch. It now gives up after two attempts and starts with an empty player.
13.2.4 Sep 15
Version 13.2.3
- Manage Storage has a new "Orphan Audio Files" row: it shows the space taken by audio files that no longer belong to any episode, and a swipe deletes them.
- The Manage Storage total in Preferences could stop counting at the first file it couldn't read and show a few megabytes instead of gigabytes; it now measures everything.
- Corrections a publisher makes to an episode in the week after release, such as chapters, transcripts and titles, now reach the app on the next refresh. Before, only new episodes were read.
- Refreshing a podcast with a very long back catalogue is much faster.
- Playback that stopped because the system's audio service restarted now resumes on its own, also with the app in the background and when the service takes a while to come back. Before, it could give up after a few seconds and show an error.
- iCloud sync of listening positions is faster on large libraries, and episodes with a very long identifier are no longer skipped in silence.
- After the connection came back, each listening-position update was sent to iCloud twice; it is now sent once.
- Applying a playlist order received from iCloud, and scanning files added through iCloud Drive, take less time.
13.2.3 Sep 9
Version 13.2.2
- Opening a feed:// link, or a feed that points to a relative address, no longer leaves a podcast with no title and no episodes. Subscriptions already broken by a feed:// link are repaired on their own.
- When an episode can't be played, the alert says whether the file is gone from the podcast's server or the server didn't answer and it's worth trying again later, with the HTTP status spelled out in words.
- On iOS 27, showing a podcast's description could freeze or close the app; it no longer does.
- Playlist sync no longer stops when an episode appears twice in the manual order.
- With CarPlay connected, the progress indicator no longer closes the app.
- Rebuilding the library no longer closes the app while it refreshes the podcast list.
- The image cache no longer closes the app and no longer discards images that are still valid.
- Starting a very long downloaded m4a episode no longer runs out of memory.
- An audio file with an unknown duration no longer closes the app when playback starts.
- Two rare crashes while switching episodes have been removed.
13.2.2 Sep 4
Version 13.2.1
- iCloud sync no longer fails on very large libraries, and the alert after a manual refresh explains any errors in plain words.
- Playlists no longer show episodes in a wrong order that differs from one device to another.
- The listening position could stop being saved after an audio output change or an interruption; saving no longer stops.
- Manage Storage now counts partial downloads and uncategorized data, so the totals add up.
- If rebuilding the library fails, it now stops and shows the error instead of leaving the library half built.
- The unsaved-changes confirmation was missing from some settings screens; it now always appears.
- On iPad and Mac, the empty player pane shows a placeholder instead of staying blank.
13.2.1 Aug 30
Version 13.2
- New Lock Screen widgets: start a playlist or open Castamatic with a single tap, without unlocking your phone.
- On the Go can download the episodes you add to it, with a switch of its own that also covers episodes queued from another device.
- Library search now finds podcasts, not only episodes, and the new "Go to Podcast" action takes you from an episode straight to the show that publishes it.
- Select All and Clear All when choosing which podcasts to include in a playlist or in the notifications.
- "Hide Fully Listened Podcasts" leaves only the shows with something left to hear in the list; podcasts with a live show on air stay visible.
- Swipe up on the mini player to open the full player, and pull the shownotes up to read the episode title in full instead of truncated.
- Premium: pick the color of the unlistened badge, and give the On the Go and Favorites playlists an icon and a color of their own.
- Preferences have been reorganized, with notifications on a screen of their own and a description under each switch explaining what it does.
- New episode alerts no longer arrive silently: Castamatic now asks for permission when you subscribe to a podcast and after a backup restore.
- Notifications now have sounds of their own: one for a new episode, one for a finished download, and one for a live show, which is now announced in your language and can break through a Focus.
- Closing playlist or podcast settings with unsaved changes now asks before discarding them.
- iCloud sync problems are explained in plain words, and one failing step no longer stops the whole sync.
- The playhead no longer jumps to the end of the episode when an outside command moves it while playback is paused.
- On iPad, pulling the player down no longer leaves it stuck halfway.
- Numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.
Version 13.1
- Home Screen widgets: see your current episode at a glance and play or pause right from the widget. Tap an episode or playlist to start listening without even opening the app.
- iCloud playlist sync: your playlists, their order, and their settings now stay in sync across all your devices.
- Custom playlist icons: personalize each playlist with hundreds of SF Symbols and your favorite colors.
- Reorder episodes by hand: drag episodes to arrange your playlists exactly the way you want.
- Loop Playlist: keep a playlist going by starting over from the top when it reaches the end.
- New autoplay options, including an "Always from Top" mode.
- Numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.

- Transcript Panel: follow along with a live-scrolling transcript right in the player, with full transport controls.
- Chapter artwork now displayed during previous/next chapter navigation.
- Improved Value for Value reliability and error handling.
- Improved CloudKit sync stability.
- Numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.
13.2.0 Aug 29
Version 13.1.7
- Favorites are no longer lost after a reinstall: episodes you starred, or added to On the Go, are now restored from iCloud even if you never played them.
- New episodes are no longer marked as listened on a podcast you already follow: "Mark Old Episodes as Listened" now applies only when a podcast actually joins your library, so a show that publishes several episodes on the same day keeps them all unplayed.
- News mode no longer marks your favorite episodes or the one loaded in the player as listened, and a new "Except Partially Played" option also spares episodes you have already started.
- The "Cleanup" screen is now called "Downloads & Cleanup", making the automatic download settings easier to find.
- The playlist filter "Streamed" is now called "Not Downloaded", and a description under the "Include episodes" switches spells out what your combination lets through — including the ones that quietly drop episodes from the playlist as soon as they are downloaded.
- Turning off every switch in a filter group no longer leaves a playlist empty: a group with nothing selected simply doesn't filter.
- Live shows announced in the standard Podcasting 2.0 format are no longer skipped: the Live playlist now appears as expected.
- Restoring a full backup is no longer rejected as an invalid file when the backup lives outside Castamatic, for example in Files or iCloud Drive.
- "Manage subscriptions" now opens subscription management inside the app, including on devices without the iTunes Store app, and opens the App Store on Apple silicon Macs.
- The queue widget fills all of its slots again: the episodes shown follow autoplay, even past the end of the playlist.
- VoiceOver now announces the download state of each episode.

- Episodes are now shared as a link, with a rich preview in Messages and other apps, and can be opened or saved anywhere a web address is accepted.
- Fixed the episode you're listening to sometimes jumping backwards when its position synced in from another device.
