Voice Dream Reader lets you listen to PDF documents, Web articles, and eBooks using text-to-speech. Although it is designed for people with visual impairment, dyslexia, ADHD, and other reading challenges, everyone can benefit. Your documents become audiobooks, so you can read while you walk, exercise or do chores. For productivity-minded people, with some practice, you can read at twice your sight-reading speed. Unlike audiobooks, you can highlight, take notes, and see the words as they're spoken to improve comprehension and retention.
Voice Dream Reader for iOS is a 2021 Apple Design Award Winner, and it's been featured by Apple as Best New App and App of the Day in 81 countries. Using the award-winning iOS app as building blocks, we wrote Voice Dream Reader Desktop from ground up as a native macOS app with a completely redesigned user interface. The result is a full-featured, desktop-class application fully optimized for the Mac.

4 Stars for subscription model
Dyerseve30
I am disappointed in the move to subscription model for the mac. I do hope this doesn't move over to iOS in the future. That being said, the voices available for the mac are fantastic, and I am enjoying the larger screen and ease of highlighting. I do have some recommendations that would make articles more enjoyable: Please allow me to drag and create a box that blocks out areas that I don't want read. For example, if my PDF article has many tables or figures that I don't want read, please allow some feature (similar to PDF margin finder) to box that figure or section out, and the voice reader just continues. This includes ability to box off authers or institutions in the begining as well as references at the end.

good as expected, but definitely needs polishing to be at least on par with the iOS version. Keyboard navigation is very lacking (especially using arrows for skipping). Regex rules copied from my iPhone don't work here at all (btw do they still not sync over icloud?). Multiple documents can't be open at the same time for whatever reason. Tabs would greatly help. Drag&Drop doesn't work for moving between folders. On a different note, despite being the state of the art in TTS reading for many years, Voice Dream is in serious danger of being superseded by up-and-coming rivals like Readwise because of its glacial pace of development and the developer’s clear lack of vision for the long term future of the product. The UI philosophy has been bad and outdated from the start, bugs persist for years, updates are focused on dubious AI features rather than useful integrations, performance improvements, organizing and exporting features, etc. Updates frequently introduce bugs or break the existing UI, which means proper testing isn’t being done. None of the features suggested by the community are being implemented. The transition to a subscription model was justified by a promise of a more active involvement with the development, but no real results have come from it. Basically unless the developer hires a team to overhaul and revive the app, I’m quite sure it will sink into obscurity in a couple years. But enjoy the money while it lasts…
Developer Response
Thanks for the feedback. All the features you're asking for are in the works. There're a lot of keyboard shortcuts for navigation: please take a look at the Control menu and all the shortcuts are listed. Regex rules synchronization should work now. If you have any other issues, please email us at support@voicedream.com.
Excellent App - Extremely Poor Business Model
Under_The_LightningMoon
When a business professes to support the disabled community, I have to remind myself of the putting yourself in someone elses shoes terminology. In consideration of the paramount finacial struggles consistently spreading across the world, I baffles me that a company would place significant strain on individuals who have already provided monetairly for an application to only be told they are now requried to pay further for the application to work. Equally frustrating, although as a community our voices were heard, there is still not resolution to connect between the applications on a computer and phone as it still requires signing up for a subscription based service. Thankfully, the application is functioning atthis point in time on my phone, I do believe it to be only a matter of time before updates will no longer be supported and I am left serching for another means of attempting to read. With needing to continously have to choose between purchasing an application, monthly subscriptions, purchasing software, or needing to choose between a mac vs pc due to the software no longer being supported on my computer or phone of choice, I may be best suited in sacrificing the $2,000 dollars for the Orcam and going back to paper books.
Incredible!

This is the best text-to-speech product I have ever used in my life. I have tried Natural Reader and Speechify, and others in the past. This product has a beautiful interface on the Mac. It feels like an Apple product. It syncs perfectly with my other devices. My favorite part is how great the OCR is and how it can identify margins even on mobile. The OCR with this product could successfully play text from a scanned PDF. I tried to use the same PDF on speechify, and it would randomly skip sentences it could not OCR. This product is by far superior. The ONLY negative is that the voices are not the best; however, I prefer the voice Evan (enhanced), which is already part of Mac and iOS, so external voice options do not matter. Also, the speed reading functionality is incredible. 10/10 is one of the best and the only apps I have not had immediate buyer's remorse after purchasing. Give it a try - you will be satisfied.
Adds support for personal voice on MacOS. Also adds AI summaries for documents.
