Word Sounds / Phonemes by Teach Speech Apps helps develop the skills needed to understand the relationship between written and spoken language through counting, blending and segmenting phonemes - the smallest units of sounds that make up a word. This app targets phonemic awareness which is the ability to hear the individual phonemes. Teaching phonemic awareness to young children is an important part of learning to read and a strong predictor of reading success. It is imperative that children understand that words are made up of speech sounds. This helps them in spelling and decoding (sounding out) unknown words. The English language has 26 letters in its alphabet and most experts believe there are 44 letter sounds. If there were 44 letters in our alphabet, then reading would really be simple! Each letter would have its own sound. However, since there are 44 sounds and only 26 letters, some letters have to make more than one sound. This interactive app helps individuals learn phonemes in a fun and engaging way. Four activities include: - Breaking up words - Segmenting - What word? - Blending - How many sounds? The biggest update to Word Sounds yet, rebuilt from the ground up. CHOOSE EASY OR ADVANCED The app now asks which level of challenge suits your child/student the first time you open it. Easy keeps to the simplest questions for younger children. Advanced adds the harder ones on top. Change it any time in Settings. DRAG AND DROP THAT RESPONDS RIGHT AWAY Pictures now move the moment a finger touches them. Previously a child had to press and hold before anything would budge, which is a hard gesture for little hands. When a picture lands on its word, the two now join together so the match is clear. EASIER TO SEE AND REACH Bigger level cards, larger text, a roomier top bar, and larger pictures throughout. A BETTER FIT ON EVERY IPAD The layout now adjusts to your screen instead of assuming one size, so nothing is cramped or cut off, whether you use an iPad mini or a 13-inch Pro. UPDATED SETTINGS Speak Words, Auto Advance and Sound On Incorrect all work properly now. Auto Advance also waits for a sentence to finish reading before turning the page, so answers are never cut off mid-word. CLEARER, FAIRER QUESTIONS We checked every question against its picture. Questions that could not be answered from what is on screen have been removed, spelling mistakes are fixed, question are asked in one consistent way, and levels no longer reuse the same photographs.
