Paste a screenshot, number the steps, pixelate what should not ship, drag the result straight out. New: clone back the piece an image generator left missing.
ItsPaint is a focused paint app for the Mac. Open an image, make a quick edit, and export it without setting up a workspace — the tools, colours, and palette stay visible in one native window.
It covers the markup jobs that usually take three apps: number the steps of a bug report with automatic step badges, pixelate a token before a screenshot leaves your Mac, and knock a background out with Instant Alpha.
TOOLS
• Twelve visible tools: pencil, brush (round, square, soft, and spray tips), highlighter, eraser, shape, text, step badge, fill, eyedropper, selection, Instant Alpha, and pixelate
• Fifteen shapes — lines, curves, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, triangles, polygons, stars, and a speech bubble — with solid, dashed, or dotted outlines and optional fills
• Step badges count up on their own: click 1, 2, 3 across a screenshot
• Pixelate for quick visual de-emphasis of the bits you would rather not ship
• Instant Alpha removes a background deterministically, with a tolerance you control — no model deciding for you
• Remove Background does the same job in one command, and declines rather than guessing when the image is too flat to key safely
• Signature capture: sign with a trackpad, mouse or tablet, or import a photo of a signature on paper — the ink is keyed to transparent and trimmed to itself, so it lands on the artwork instead of on a white patch
CANVAS
• Pointer-centred zoom, pixel grid, and live tool footprints
• Paste without losing anything: the canvas grows to hold a larger image, and the window follows
• Rotate by any angle, with the canvas growing to fit the corners
• Crop, canvas resize, and scale
FILES
• Editable .itspaint documents: a lossless PNG with a JSON sidecar, so the file opens anywhere
• Export to PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, AVIF, PDF, and ICO, with format and scale controls
• Opens PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, and HEIC
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
• No account, no telemetry, no cloud — the app contains no network code at all
• Sandboxed, and it reads only the files you choose
• Open source under the MIT licence
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel.

Clone and Soften. Press C, click once on a part of the image that is intact, then
drag over the part that is missing. It copies at a fixed offset, so you set the
pairing once and fill a gap in as many passes as it takes. F softens the join
afterwards. Useful when a generated image leaves a chunk out of a shape.
Diagonal lines and shape outlines are antialiased now, so an arrow across a
screenshot has no staircase on it. Edges in the shape options turns it off again for
pixel art, and the pencil is unaffected.
The tool options panel was rebuilt. Size is a wedge that thickens to the right with
its stops marked on it, the highlighter's opacity control is a wash of the current
ink, and Spotlight's dim is a plate whose darkness is the value. The step badge
leads with its number and can start anywhere, for a sequence continued onto a second
screenshot.
Also fixed: the highlighter's size control said 2 and painted 4, right-clicking a
palette swatch now loads Colour 2 the way its tooltip always promised, and the Match
sliders stop where the coverage measurements do.
