I am using Lingo to learn Hindi. I am a novice when it comes to the language. I’ve started my journey by using the flashcards to learn simple words (e.g., fruit). While I have an extreme way to go before I can speak Hindi fluently, I have been able to use the learned words in everyday conversations with my in-laws who enjoy speaking Hindi more than English. They have been surprised by what I’ve learned in such a short period of time as well as how I am correctly pronouncing said words. It’s exciting and I’m happy with my progress. Lingo is helping build my confidence in understanding my family and feel more respectful to learn a language that makes them feel comfortable. It will also help me to set an example for my children and help them learn the language because I am able to teach them simple words and, hopefully, phrases as I continue using Lingo.

So far I love almost everything about this app. The only thing I don’t like is that sometimes the completion percentage changes. For instance, yesterday my Lesson 1 showed 100% completed, but today it shows 80%. Is this because of an update? Should I go back and see if a new word was added? I guess if this is the case, it would be nice to know which units are updated and what has been added to them. (Perhaps just a simple notification like “a new word was added to Lesson 1.1” would be helpful - and not drive us OCD people insane 😆). #goingforallAplusesWell worth the monthly membership. Honestly, I might even pay more. You can’t find a more comprehensive teaching tool for $30 a month anywhere. Well done!

I have been using this language learning app for a few weeks now and I am extremely impressed with its features and effectiveness. I am an ESL teacher with a Master’s in TESOL. I already taught myself how to decode in Dari a little, but I am disappointed that the app anticipates an already fluent reader of another alphabet (especially one as obscure as Dari) without any lessons to learn the letters and their pronunciations first. The lessons are mainly flash cards, not many visuals except for fruit on the free version. I just took the test of Dari adjectives and got a 52%, which the app indicated was failing. I disagree with this grading practice. It would be more aligned to best practices in language assessment to measure my growth in the language as opposed to holding me to an arbitrary standard of fluency of a language I am learning. I am grateful that this app offers Dari, which DuoLingo does not, but there is much room for improvement in their practices. Hopefully it will continue to improve.
