Ever unmuted in the wrong app? Sneezed on camera? Wondered "wait, am I muted right now?" MutexCam replaces that doubt with a hardware-switch feeling: one place that controls your camera and microphone for every app on your Mac.
CAMERA OFF. ACTUALLY OFF.
Select "Mutex Camera" once in your meeting app, and from then on one switch controls your video everywhere. Flip it off and every app sees black – instantly, mid-call, with the camera light off. Or upload your own image: a "Be right back" card, your logo, your good side.
ONE MIC SWITCH FOR EVERY APP
MutexCam mutes the microphone at the system level – every input device, every app, all at once. Plug in a USB mic while muted? It's muted on arrival. And if a meeting app tries to quietly unmute you from its own button, MutexCam re-mutes it in milliseconds. Off means off.
PUSH TO TALK, EVERYWHERE
Stay muted by default. Hold Option+Space to speak – in any app, without switching windows – and release to go silent again. Like a walkie-talkie for your meetings, with a clear TALKING indicator so you always know your state.
THE PANIC BUTTON
Press Option+Shift+Z and both camera and microphone cut at the same instant. For the doorbell, the kids, the coworker, the sneeze. Coming back is deliberately per-switch, so nothing re-opens by accident.
ALWAYS-VISIBLE STATUS
A small floating panel stays on top of every window – even full-screen meetings – showing Mic, Camera, and Push-to-Talk state at a glance. Press Cmd+Shift+8 to show or hide it. It never steals your keyboard focus. A menu bar icon mirrors everything.
It also watches your back: if some app bypasses the virtual camera and reads your physical webcam directly, MutexCam warns you.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No account. No tracking. No data collected. Everything happens on your Mac. MutexCam starts in the safe state: mic muted, camera off, until you say otherwise.
SETUP IN ONE MINUTE
Approve the camera extension (one click in System Settings).
Pick "Mutex Camera" as the camera in your meeting apps – once.
That's it. All shortcuts are customizable.
Works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, Slack, Discord, Webex, Safari, Chrome – anything that uses a camera or microphone.
