Nave - next generation Wavetable Synthesis
Nave is Waldorf’s first synthesizer App development – created by chief engineer and director Stefan Stenzel, NLog mastermind Rolf Wöhrmann and Design Guru Axel Hartmann.
The Nave sound engine includes two novel Wavetable oscillators, leaving every previous attempt in wavetable synthesis far behind. The spectrum of a sound can be transposed independently of its pitch. The waves are being rendered periodically to noisy. Especially sounds with an accent on formants can be reproduced easily, which made us integrate a speech synthesizer for the easy creation of wavetables.
The clearly structured UI invites both beginners and advanced users to experiment, and the large display of the iPad makes Wavetable creation and editing a blast. Besides Speech Synthesis, Wavetables can also be made by analysing audio files. Further stretching, rotating and shifting in spectral domain allows Wavetables to be further refined or distorted.
All factory Wavetables from Microwave, Wave and Blofeld are included, complemented by new ones that make extensive useof the enhanced possibilities.
In addition to the Wavetable Oscillators, Nave offers an oscillator module featuring the novel Überwave that can fatten your sound by up to eight detuned oscillators.
The filter offers the familiar outstanding Waldorf sound, featuring lowpass, bandpass and highpass with either 12dB or 24dB slope.
The Drive section offers different characteristics, and it can be positioned in the signal path: before or after the filter, or as a summing overdrive before or after the equalizer - for those who prefer harsh screaming sounds over delicate Wavetable sweeps.
An extended modulation matrix and diverse real time control functionality is waiting for animating Nave sounds in any desired direction.
Besides the classic virtual chromatic keyboard, Nave can be played with the “Blades” that allow for dynamic triggering of polyphonic modulation by sliding the fingers in x or y direction.
The 4-track recorder can be used to build your own Nave songs or to simply sketch your music, inspired by the sounds of Nave.

This synthesizer helped to set the standard for the platform in the early days of music on mobile devices. Essentially unaltered but for compatibility updates, this app continues to delight me with its deep sound-design and looping capabilities. Users can get lost for hours editing wavetables and can zip through the process by transforming images into custom tables and then, either way, tune the results with ample higher-level tools. Even the on-screen keyboard distinguishes the app as being among the most predictable and responsive of its kind.Waldorf did all this without years of examples on the platform to study. They just went all in and made a classic. If you do not know Nave, do yourself a favor and give it a close look.
Amazing wavetable synth, but eats battery and has a memory leak

Amazing sounds, great interface and arpeggiator. Unfortunately, still no AU plugin version, but I can live with that for now. The biggest issue is that it eats battery like a hog and if you forget to kill the app explicitly AND reboot your device, you’ll find your iPad out of battery within a few hours, even if it’s not being used / the screen is off. This is probably due to background audio, but it’s definitely annoying and should be fixed.I see the developer has responded with the suggestion of disabling background audio. This still doesn’t explain why the battery goes dead after force-killing the app. There are plenty of other iOS apps with this “background audio” option which don’t continue eating battery after you force close them... and they don’t require you to reboot your iPad. I don’t want to turn this into an advertisement for other apps, but please: fix this properly.
Developer Response
Hi, just disable Background Audio in the "Tape & Sys" screen.
The magic carpet synth

If this thing was packed in a metal box with knobs, you would pay BANK for something as special as Nave. Wonderful sounding, bursting with creative potential. There's a lot to take in but after a few hours you will be creating crazy, lush, chaotic, brutal, hypnotic works of art. There are some stability bugs I've noticed using my 3rd gen iPad on iOS 7.0 so save often. Pulling up menu items can seem unresponsive at times. Bugs I'm sure will be resolved in future updates. This synth sits right up there with Animoog, Thor, and Magellan. Thank you Waldorf!!!! Update 2016- still blows me away that this app completely destroys hardware synths. Amazing. Keep up the good work Waldorf!
Fantastic synth…except not AU support!

Nave is an excellent synth very deep and sounds fantastic. I’ve had the Waldorf blofeld and iridium and Nave has that core Waldorf sound amd feature set…however Nave is lacking AU support which is a crucial mistake. I used apps like Drambo to write and it cannot use Nave in anything I do on the iPad musically except for in stand alone mode which leaves me not using it that often other than messing around and writing random patches for no reason, I’ve yet to use Nave in any actual production due to the lack of AU support…what good is an iOS synth if I can’t use it as a plug in? When I’m working in my real studio I use my hardware synths so it makes Nave kind of useless. If Waldorf added AU support Nave would be easily one of the top must have synths in the iOS environment.
