Nyxd Editor
Fast and nice code editor

Nyxd is a dark text editor for macOS, written from scratch for speed.
Open a 1 GB log and it appears in about 60 milliseconds, using around 20 MB of
memory. There's no progress bar, because the file is never loaded — the viewport
streams straight from a memory-mapped piece table.
FAST BY CONSTRUCTION
• A 1 GB file opens in ~60 ms and stays responsive while you scroll and edit
• Search runs over raw UTF-8 bytes, so finding a needle in a gigabyte takes
milliseconds
• Colouring starts on the first frame — 79 languages across 306 file extensions,
built in. No packages to install, no language server to wait for
DRAFTS THAT LOOK AFTER THEMSELVES
• Start typing without picking a filename or a folder
• Drafts save themselves and take a name from what you wrote
• Typo-tolerant search finds the note you only half-remember
OPENS FAR MORE THAN TEXT
• Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF become readable text and CSV
• Archives and zip-based formats unpack into a browsable tree — edit, then repack
• Databases, images and binaries open as a hex and ASCII dump, magic bytes shown
• Paste a path on the first line and press ⌥⌘O: a file opens, a folder opens as
a project
BUILT FOR THE KEYBOARD
• Multi-cursor — ⌘-click for extra carets, ⇧⌘L to select every match at once
• Find and replace with live counts, regex, case-preserving replace and minimap
markers
• A minimap that labels headings, MARK comments and declarations, Xcode-style
• Reformat a minified blob into readable lines; one undo puts it back
LIVES IN THE MENU BAR
Drop a file to open it, a folder for project mode, or a selection dragged out of
any app to capture it as a named draft — language detected, colouring correct.
TWELVE DARK THEMES
No light theme. One consistent dark aesthetic across the whole window.
Markdown opens in a reading view — warm paper page, real heading hierarchy, live
re-render as you edit. Pair it with Pin on Top to read docs while you work.
Everything happens on your Mac. No account, no analytics, no network access —
apart from the optional font downloader, which only runs if you ask for it.
Requires macOS 14 or later.

Your Office files are folders now.
A .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .odt, .epub or .jar is really a ZIP archive with a folder of parts inside. Open one and Nyxd unpacks it right in the app and shows the whole package in the sidebar, with the part that holds the words already open. Every XML part is laid out neatly first, instead of arriving as one endless line. The folder is a copy saved next to your document, so the original is never touched.
PDFs open as text.
A PDF opens as a folder with one text file per page. Scroll to the page you need, or search across all of them with ⌘K. Scanned PDFs with no text still open as raw bytes, so you always see what's really there.
Typing is fast again, even in big files.
Syntax colouring now only redraws what's on screen. Typing ten characters into a 2.2 MB file used to cost 13.8 seconds of highlighting work; it now costs 13 milliseconds.
Reading mode, refined.
- Six page tones: Paper, Cream, Mist, Slate, Ink, or Match Editor Theme.
- Optional paper texture, six finishes including Film, Canvas, Haze and Foxed Paper.
- Right-click the page to change typography, background, text size and texture.
- The reading column now fits your window, while lines stay a comfortable length.
- Italic text that wraps across lines now displays correctly.
Private by design.
Nyxd collects nothing and tracks nothing. There is no account, no analytics and no network code. Everything runs on your Mac, inside Apple's sandbox.
Your work is safe.
- Saving works everywhere, including files on the Desktop and files opened from Terminal.
- A short notice tells you what happened: saved, deleted, now read-only, reloaded. Errors look like errors.
- Revert asks before discarding changes.
- If a save fails, Save As… is offered, so a window is never stuck.
- If a file is deleted on disk, Nyxd tells you and keeps your copy open.
- An empty sidebar now explains why and offers Grant Access… when macOS needs your permission.
Small things.
- A one-time shortcut tip after a window opens, suited to what you're editing. Shown three times at most.
- Right-click the title bar to Copy Path, Copy Name, Reveal in Finder or Share.
- Help ▸ Nyxd Editor Help opens the documentation.
- A new About window.
- Launch at Login is off until you turn it on.
