true to its roots

as the original was written for a screen with a much smaller resolution, this ipad version stays true to the spirit of the original Riven. with the ability to bookmark, chnage the speed of the transitions and a few other options, it has a leg up on the steam version, which honestly looks crummy on my great big monitor. the only possible improvement would be to make a smoothed version, much like realMyst.

Richly rewards a patient and curious player

Myst is obviously the most famous title in this series (and maybe even the entire point-and-click genre), but for my money Riven tops the first game in pretty much every way. While Myst has plenty of interesting puzzles and an engaging story, Riven weaves these same elements into a much richer and more immersive world. The graphics are dated to be sure, but top-notch production values (even by today's standards) and virtually no narrative handholding make it one of the few adventure games that truly allows the player to feel like an explorer as they traverse the deserted, decaying island world of Riven.

The one downside to this more ambitious approach is that I found the early going to be particularly frustrating, walking around the island over and over again looking for anything resembling a puzzle or even a clue to where a puzzle might be. Making any sort of forward progress in this game requires careful observation of the environment, and to make full use of the tiny scraps of information you uncover about the island and its inhabitants.

The good news is that, if you can get past this steep learning curve, there are plenty of satisfying secrets waiting to be discovered at every turn. The story is minimal, but definitely heats up as the game goes on. In my opinion Riven fully rewards the considerable effort it demands of its players, and provides the best adventure game experience to be found on the App Store.

Incredibly challenging, but addicting.

I played this on my PC with the 5 CDs it came with back in 1998. I played Myst first and enjoyed it, but Riven is the game that impressed me. The graphics were top notch for the time this was made and the improvement was so impressive that I could just stare at a scene for awhile and enjoy the view as if I was really there. Playing the game turns you into a bit of a snoop, a tinker of gadgets, knobs and switches, a thorough detective for clues, secret passages and doorways, and a bit of a thrill seeker- considering how real this game feels after awhile! Even though I used the hints on the Internet frequently to help me get through the game, I was captivated by every turn. The landscape is beautiful, colorful, similar to reality with an original touch. I had dreams about this game! I'm so excited the game makers have made this available for modern devices. I have played other sequels to Myst and Riven and they are just as captivating. I hope those will be available here as well. I miss them very much.
