What’s New

Version 2.3.2

- Fixes a bug where in some cases ScreenFloat erroneously reported its library to be inaccessible

ScreenFloat v2.3 contains the following new features and improvements:

= NEW FEATURES =
- Text recognition now checks for addresses, numbers, links and emails for a much improved user experience (2025.07.09)
- A new HUD, available during screen recordings, allows you to mute your mic and system audio, add "edit markers", and pause, resume and stop the recording (macOS 13 or newer) (2025.05.02)
- You can now add "edit markers" while you are recording your screen, making cutting easier later on. ScreenFloat automatically adds markers for muting and unmuting audio, for pausing the recording, and for switching apps and spaces. (macOS 13 or newer) (2025.05.29)
- Create GIFs from Screen Recordings (2025.04.07)
- New "Add Border" option for image exports and dragging out from floating image shots, to help prevent "bleed" when embedding into documents or websites with a similar background color (thank you, Adam C. E.) (2025.07.12)
- New double-click action to quickly add checkmarks, x-marks or numbered lists to floating shots (2025.07.17)
- New double-click action to quickly redact detected information (2025.07.17)
- Under Settings > Shots Browser, you're now able to change how Shots are named. Also available when exporting shots (2025.07.21)
- Fullscreen captures are now easier, by pressing the respective keyboard shortcut a second time (2025.05.12)

= IMPROVEMENTS =
- Improves compatibility of multi-track-audio screen recordings and sharing to other apps (2025.06.09)
- Image Shots can now also be marked up in the Shots Browser using Quick Look, especially useful if you like to annotate using your iPad and Pencil with Continuity (2025.06.18)
- The double-click action "Add tag" now supports multiple tags (2025.06.23)
- You can now add shadows to your annotations (2025.06.26)
- Re-capturing now opens on the screen the mouse cursor is on, instead of wherever a shot was last captured (2025.06.27)
- Rotating an image shot no longer touches the image data, but uses the EXIF orientation field instead, like Quick Look has been doing since macOS 12.3 at least (2025.07.14)
- Improved the way redactions are created, by tuning each redaction's parameters to every detected feature individually (2025.07.16)
- When dragging a floating shot to other apps, the filename can now be obfuscated (2025.07.22)
- Snap-to-edges works a little bit better when cropping shots (2025.07.23)
- The "Reduce DPI" setting in the floating shot's on-the-fly drag and drop settings popover is now also available for still images from videos (2025.07.23)

Huge time-saver!

I had heard about this app a few months ago. I finally got around to purchasing it and I’m really, really happy I have. It’s a massive time-saver and saves me the annoyance of having to take screenshots and then going through the work of finding them and placing them where I need to which (in the past) involved having a finder window open and then dragging it into the editor I was working in.

For example, as I watch videos teaching me how to use a program or whatever, I’ll take notes in an editor while I watch the video. Sometimes I want to grab a screenshot to drop into my notes to highlight a particular point. With ScreenFloat I can take that screenshot and have it float in my view where I can then copy it and drop it into my notes immediately instead of digging around in my file structure to complete the same task.

The app is a little more powerful than that and I can see how it’ll come in handy for other tasks (like another reviewer mentioned taking a screenshot of server settings and having it simply “float” there while you type it all in instead of having to copy and paste it somewhere) but even just using it in the way that I am it’s a great utility. Well worth the money and I highly recommend it. Thanks, dev!

2 Gems: The app itself and User Support

Update6 months later: I continue to be very impressed with both the app and user support, from the software developer, Mr. Gansrigler-Hrad. Once again, I got a very timely response to a query about a “missing” Print option. It was fixed the next day! Of course not all fixes happen so quickly. While the video screen capture is probably the most complex new addition, I’m most excited by the “Detect text” option. I use it regularly and it works very well. Indeed, from a screenfloat it detects both English and Chinese even if the original target was an image. This is definitely an app to get and to use if you ever take screenshots. Original Review:
I've been using screenFloat for over 4 years. The free and periodic upgrades have led to a feature rich but still easy to use piece of screen capture software.
I've only had to contact user support once about an issue - but the software developer responded very quickly and in a subsequent update resolved the quirk. I'm very glad I ran across this app.

Incredibly helpful for everyone

My previous review still stands, and thanks to the developer for updating it to work with the upcoming Sierra operating system:

You may think to yourself, “I don’t see why I’d need this, I can already use the Mac’s built-in screen capture functionality, it’s fine.” I get that, but here’s what you’re missing.

In just one day of using your computer try to pay attention to how often you need some information from another window, another space, or another app. You switch from window to window and back again, making sure you got it right. Or maybe you spend time resizing a bunch of things so you can see all of them at the sizes you need to. You might be a designer who needs to temporarily recall some RGB values in a Photoshop palette or dialog box. Or maybe you’re a developer who needs to recall the sizes of a couple of views but can’t have them on the screen at the same time.

Boom, ScreenFloat is the answer. Just type your hotkey, drag around the thing you need to recall, then put it out of your mind and switch back to your other task. There’s the info, floating right where you need it, even though that other window/app/space is no longer visible.

This app saves me hours of stupid switching back-and-forth or copying-temporarily-to-notepad or resizing windows or dealing with giant full-screen screenshots or writing on paper (heaven forbid!).

So, so useful.
