Starling Lab

Heart & circulation simulator

$29.99

Move blood volume, contractility or vessel tone and watch cardiac output, pressure waveforms and the ECG answer in real time. 20 presets, from haemorrhage to shock. Starling is an interactive, real-time simulator of the human circulation, for students, teachers and anyone who would rather watch cardiovascular physiology behave than read about it. Turn the physiological knobs — blood volume, heart rate, contractility, vessel tone, the microcirculation of a single organ — and watch what the circulation produces: cardiac output, arterial pressure, an ECG strip, and pressure waveforms from the left ventricle down to the capillaries and back up the veins. A REAL MODEL, NOT AN ANIMATION Nothing on screen is scripted. Sixteen elastic compartments — four cardiac chambers, the aorta, seven systemic organ beds, the venous reservoir and the pulmonary loop — are joined by resistances and solved 2,000 times per simulated second with a 4th-order Runge–Kutta integrator. Every pressure and flow emerges from three laws the real circulation obeys: pressure–volume relations, Ohm's law for flow, and conservation of volume. Frank–Starling behaviour is not coded in; it falls out of the model on its own. WHAT YOU CONTROL • Hemodynamics — total blood volume, 2.5 to 8.0 L, added to or removed from the venous reservoir exactly as in haemorrhage or transfusion. • Cardiac — sinus rate, plus the five classical tropies: chronotropy, bathmotropy, dromotropy, inotropy, lusitropy, each from −100 to +100 %. • Vasculature by caliber — large arteries, arterioles, capillaries, precapillary sphincters, venules and veins, each 0–200 % of resting tone. Same word, "vasoconstriction"; six very different consequences. • Microcirculation, organ by organ — arteriolar diameter (resistance goes as diameter⁻⁴), arteriolar resistance and precapillary sphincter tone, for each of seven systemic districts. WHAT YOU SEE • An animated anatomy canvas of the whole circulation, with flow particles, arterial and venous colouring and the hepatic portal system drawn as it really is: the GI bed drains into the liver, not into the venae cavae. • A synthetic lead-II ECG at 500 Hz, generated from the same electrical events that trigger the mechanical heart, so the strip and the pressure traces can never disagree. P, QRS, T, PR/QRS/QT intervals, PVCs with their compensatory pause and post-extrasystolic potentiation. • Pressure monitors at every level: LV, RV, LA, RA, aorta with its dicrotic notch, peripheral artery with pulse-pressure amplification, arterioles, the three capillary levels, venules, a CVP trace with a, c and v waves, and the pulmonary artery, capillary and vein. • Beat-averaged readouts computed the way a bedside monitor computes them: CO, SV, systolic/diastolic, MAP, pulse pressure, SVR, CVP, EF, LV EDV/ESV, wedge, PA mean, O₂ delivery, effective heart rate and the ECG intervals. 20 TEACHING PRESETS In eight groups: haemorrhage and haemorrhagic shock, volume overload, venous pooling on standing, HFrEF and HFpEF, cardiogenic, septic and neurogenic shock, essential and isolated systolic hypertension, exercise, first-degree AV block, sinus bradycardia, SVT, frequent PVCs, β-blockade, β-agonist, coronary stenosis — and the normal resting adult to return to. Apply one with the clock running and watch the circulation travel to its new steady state. BUILT FOR TEACHING Run, pause and reset at any moment. A simulation clock from 0.1× to 5× — slow down to watch the isovolumic phases and valve events, speed up to let a new steady state settle. Full keyboard shortcuts and a Simulation menu on Mac. Controls can be restored on launch, or start fresh from the standard baseline. And a complete in-app Help: a physiology guide that explains every control, every trace and every equation behind them. Starling is an educational model, not a medical device. It is a simplified, lumped-parameter representation of an average resting adult, with no reflex control, no gas exchange and no drug pharmacokinetics. It must not be used for clinical decision-making, diagnosis, treatment planning or patient-specific prediction.
