Tarjimly is an app that lets you volunteer as a translator or interpreter for refugees and NGOs around the world. Here's how it works:

1 - Bilinguals sign up and get notified whenever a refugee needs a translator. They connect in a live session where they can send text, pictures, documents, or even get on a phone call. High performing volunteers can even become certified!

2 - Refugees and Aid Workers sign up and request a translator based on their needs (like asylum interviews, emergency medicine, navigating a new country, or any humanitarian need). Tarjimly uses machine learning to connect them the best available translator in seconds.

Our mission is to mobilize 1 million volunteers to improve humanitarian services forever by eliminating language barriers for refugees.

hello , I’m one of the one of the volunteers

Developer Response ,

Hi Reem. Thank you for your suggestion, and all your help volunteering on the app. We definitely would like to localise the app in more languages in the future. For now we have a leaflet in Arabic on the website which shows step by step how to use the app, and can be used as a guide to understand how to download and use the app.

How irresponsible can you be?

I am a professional interpreter . For starters, you do not even get the name right, translators write, interpreters speak. Second, you are asking for “bilinguals” Do you have any idea of the training that interpreters have? Do you know how difficult is to interpret ? Because you drive a car, you can fix it too??? Do you know how much damage a well meant and inexperienced bilingual can cause in a an asylum case? In the medical field have you heard about the 70 million dollar lawsuit for the word “intoxicado”? This application and this initiative are irresponsible, you are playing with people’s lives. And what certification are you offering, who is backing this certification ?

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your concern and feedback. I wanted to reply even though it's been a very long time since you left your review. Most commonly the topics translated on Tarjimly are related to day to day communications, such as registrations, informing about classes and activities, communicating basic needs. We also rely on the translators to self-disclose their level and only accept sessions which are appropriate to their experience. You raise a good point for discussion though, about how we can prevent situations happening as you described, and ensuring only suitable translators connect to more complicated and urgent situations such as medical care and asylum cases. That is something we will look into as a team.

Tarjimly Refugee Translation App.

It’s amazing to finally see this project turned into a functioning app. Providing translation to refugees, immigrants, orphans, widows, and asylum seekers from the comfort of my home is incredible. This is a great way to volunteer!
