4.1 brings big improvements for building and working with information-rich timelines or advanced import/export workflows! Pop-out Description Fields: Events have always had a “Description” field where you could enter any text or notes, but it was always confined to the Inspector sidebar attached to the window. Now, click on the “pop-out” button and it will detach into a separate, fully resizable, text editor window, where you can comfortably edit or read even long-form text. Custom Event Properties: Add your own fields to your events, from “Assignee” to “Percent Complete” to “Source” to anything else. They show up in the Inspector, just like the built-in fields, they are nicely formatted in the Event Details view, and you can use them as filtering criteria, including both exact matches and comparisons like “contains” or “less than”. They also support CSV import/export, so if you’re working with external data sources, you can keep all your properties together. Improved Filtering UI: A pull-down menu next to the Event Filter input field lets you quickly add advanced filtering criteria like date ranges, custom property checks, tags, sections, and more. This small update fixes a few bugs: - On macOS Tahoe, color pickers in the Inspector, such as for backgrounds or event graphics, were mis-aligned with their labels (offset a bit down); this lines everything back up. - If you perform a CSV Import with the "Update existing events with the same title" option enabled, new dates and other properties from the CSV file are applied to your existing events. In prior versions, however, your events might also get rearranged vertically, as the importer would reassign them to rows in your timeline based on their order in the CSV file. This update fixes that to leave them in their existing rows, while still arranging new events in input order. - If you're working with BC dates on a Mac set up for non-English date formats, the Inspector date fields would still show "BC", as if your Mac were set for English, but would require you to type in the normal equivalent for your language, a very confusing situation.

Turn on the new Dateline to get a vertical line, and current date tip, that follows your mouse as you move it around the timeline. Use this to clearly see where you are, and what events lie on that date, on a dense timeline. Build even longer prehistoric timelines, with date support extended back to 1 million years BC, and improvements to year number displays. This is a pure bug-fix release, resolving these issues: - Starting with macOS Sequoia 15.5, some of the toolbar items stopped working: the zoom slider would not appear in the “Zoom” pop-up menu, and the “Timeline” pop-up menu (years, months, etc.) did nothing. (Both functions still worked via other means like the main menu; this was just a problem in the toolbar.) - When dismissing the Quick Entry input, if one of the text fields was focused, its focus highlight (blue border) briefly would move up into the toolbar area before disappearing.

This update fixes a bug that affected users with certain calendar or region settings on their Mac; in those cases, Go to Date, Go to Today, and Inspector date pickers would display and choose incorrect dates.

This update fixes a bug in Quick Entry, Go to Date, and other places: in some languages, when typing in a numeric date separated by “.” characters (e.g. 28.1.2025), the app would previously misinterpret the date and reject it with an “out of range” message.

3.8.1 fixes a bug in date inputs that appeared on Macs configured for certain specific languages and regions. This could affect dates in the Inspector, Quick Entry, and other places, in some cases leading to a hang or crash. It contains no other updates over 3.8, which was a large update filled with improvements and greatly-increased historical date support.

Working on timelines of history or even prehistory? Fixed a crash which only occurred on recent versions of macOS Sonoma, and only for certain document layouts. The crash could occur when editing filters or sections, and sometimes in other cases.

3.6 brings a batch of feature updates, including: - Date-range highlights on events can now be limited to one section, to below the header, or to just the header. - The document zoom level is now controllable from a slider, letting you choose any value from 25% to 400%, though the existing fixed levels are still available. - Long titles in left-side section headers now word-wrap if needed. Notably, rapid shift+click multi-select is now more consistent, section title color changes now always take effect right away, and a significant slowdown was fixed when editing a multi-line event title over a document with weekend shading enabled. 3.5.3 fixes two bugs: - When adding new point event icons, it was possible (but thankfully not common) to get into a state where the icon window and the Inspector's icon picker both stopped working! This update prevents that from happening and, if it had already happened, restores the use of the icons you’d previously added. - TimeStory was displaying certain SVG icons incorrectly, with extra overlaid content; this update now displays those icons correctly.

This update fixes two important bugs. - In 3.5.1, on macOS versions prior to Sonoma, when you completely hid the timeline header, you were unable to select or edit *any* timeline contents! - In some cases, when you click on the app and it automatically pops open a new, untitled document, it would not use the correct default timeline template, starting you with a style different from the one you get by explicitly choosing File > New.

3.3.2 fixes a small bug, speeds up large timeline updates during editing, and brings a couple of other minor improvements. - If you used a built-in timeline configuration (years, quarters, months, weeks, or days), but customized the labeling (for example by changing “day of month” to “month and day”), there was a bug that didn’t keep that change when you again loaded the document later. Fixed. - On a large, colorful, or text-heavy timeline, things like animated timescale changes or drag-and-drop editing are now faster and smoother, thanks to some performance improvements in the code which draws the timeline. - The automatic text color logic would sometimes choose black text over some dark colors where white text would have much better contrast; this has been adjusted. - CSV files exported from TimeStory now work better when opened in Microsoft Excel. If you’ve ever done a CSV export and seen strange characters while loading into Excel, this is for you. If not, because you use Numbers or something else, this won’t affect you at all.
