TotalEdit
Code editor for Total.js
Free
Open a file and start. Syntax highlighting for ten languages, Total.js and jComponent completions, and Prettier built in. Works offline on your Mac and iPad.
TotalEdit is a light code editor for people who just want to open a file and change it.
No project to create. No workspace to configure. No indexing, no build step, no account. Double-click a file and you are editing it.
KNOWS TOTAL.JS
This is the part no other light editor does. TotalEdit carries the Total.js and jComponent API inside the app, so completions work with no server and no network:
• The $ controller context, and the DATA and NOSQL query builders — chains resolve, so DATA.find('users'). offers where, fields and callback
• RESTBuilder, schemas, actions, and the framework globals with their documentation
• Total.js config file keys
• Tangular helpers inside {{ }}
• jComponent attributes inside a tag, and the bundled CSS classes and icons
• Snippets for the constructs you write every day
A .js file could be a Total.js 5 controller, a Total.js 4 one, or a jComponent plugin running in a browser — and those share almost no API. TotalEdit works out which from the path and the content, shows it in the status bar, and lets you correct it in one click. It also understands that an HTML component holds both halves: in a script total block you get server completions, and a few lines below, in the same file, browser ones.
TEN LANGUAGES, PROPERLY
Syntax highlighting built on tree-sitter for JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, YAML, Markdown, Shell, Python and Dockerfile — plus the Total.js config format, and Total.js view directives inside HTML.
FORMATTING WITHOUT A TOOLCHAIN
Prettier is built into the app and runs offline. No Node, no npm install, nothing to set up. It follows your own tab and indent settings, and any .prettierrc next to the file.
AN EDITOR THAT RESPECTS YOUR FILE
The text encoding, the line endings and the trailing newline are preserved exactly as they were. Opening a CRLF file on a Mac does not quietly convert it. A binary file is refused rather than shown as gibberish, so you cannot save a mangled copy over the original.
WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT
• Auto-indent, self-closing brackets and quotes, comment toggling, line duplication and movement
• Optional folder sidebar — a listing, not a project — with files opening as tabs in the same window
• Six themes, your choice of monospaced face, size and line height
• Tabs or spaces, word wrap, current-line highlight, line numbers
ON IPAD
The same editor, the same completions. Files are edited where they live — iCloud Drive, Files, a checkout — not imported into the app. The strip above the keyboard shows completions while you type, and the rest of the time it carries the characters a code editor needs and a software keyboard buries three taps deep: brackets, quotes, backtick, $, =, ; and :. Hardware keyboard shortcuts match the Mac.
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
TotalEdit has no network permission at all. There is no account, no sync, no analytics and no telemetry. It cannot phone home because it cannot reach the network.
Building something larger? TotalIDE is the full Total.js IDE, with project management, a bundled Node.js runtime, debugging and AI assistance.
