The objective of training is to improve performance. The principal method is to create a Training Load (stimulus) that causes the human body to adapt. If the load is too high, it can slow adaptations and lead to injury. If the load is too low, adaptations are not sufficient to improve performance. Virtually all runners nowadays use a wearable device that captures their training data. Yet on any given day, most have no clear answers to important questions: - Is my fitness increasing? - Have I accumulated a lot of fatigue? - Am I ready to race? Yet multiple sports-science methodologies have been developed over the years to address this knowledge gap. In the past, they were only practically useful for competitive (elite) runners who journaled their training and had access to lab equipment and professional coaches. Today, a wearable device makes capturing training session data easy, and software can provide high-quality analytics—so it is naturally in most runners' interest to optimise their training and realise their potential, regardless of skill level or goals. In the words of Marius Bakken, MD ("Norwegian Method Applied" author), the primary question that we need to answer is: -- What is the highest intensity you can repeat, at the highest sustainable volume, week after week, for the lowest possible cost? EverRunner aims to support runners in training by answering three practical questions: How should I train today? — Rest, maintain or build? Avoid overloading yourself. How did my workout go? — How hard that run was, and what it added. How effectively am I training? — Whether fitness is building over weeks. It is doing this by calculating and monitoring Training Load, Fatigue and Fitness using Banister’s Training Impulse (TRIMP), a published sports-science method (Morton, Fitz-Clarke & Banister, J Appl Physiol, 1990). Each run creates a Training Load from duration and intensity, which accumulates over time as Fatigue and Fitness. The difference between them is your Training Balance. By changing the intensity or duration of your runs, you can influence Training Balance to match what you need: building fitness, recovering from injury, tapering for a race, or running for fun. EverRunner updates Training Load and Training Balance after each run, so you can see where you are. Training Balance is only one part of the picture. It does not know how you feel today, or about injury, stress, sleep or nutrition. It only looks at your running workouts — if you cross-train, your body may be under more load than this shows. Consider all of this when you decide how to train, and consult a coach or a medical professional where appropriate.
