Hi all! Just checking in with a little update for the new OSes — stay tuned for more additions later in the year, and as always feel free to send me any feedback or suggestions for future updates. Here’s what’s new: ‣ New extra large widgets for iPadOS 15 ‣ UI style adjustments for iOS 15 ‣ Picky now displays playlist artwork in the main Playlists screen, not just in the detail screens ‣ The main albums singled out from the Deep Cuts, Quick Plays, and Long Plays lists on the Search screen are now pulled at random for a bit more variety ‣ Deep Cuts now also includes some older albums that iTunes doesn’t have a last play date for ‣ Improved Dark Mode placeholder images for albums without cover art

Hi all! This update is chock-full of lots of little improvements, as well as one big new feature for folks with Picky Deluxe. What’s Picky Deluxe, you ask? It’s a one-time in-app purchase that’s a great way to support my work on the app and unlock some bonus features (previously: a set of alternate app icons to choose from). So with this update I’m bringing in a second bonus feature that I’m calling Library Discovery: new ways of slicing up your music library to surface albums in heavy rotation and those you may not typically reach for. When you open up the Search view you’ll see these new lists: Recently Added and Recently Played (available to everyone), and a few more that are a part of Picky Deluxe — Deep Cuts (albums that weren’t played recently), Quick Plays (albums and EPs half an hour or less), and Long Plays (albums over 80 minutes). I’m planning to expand on this with even more lists in the future, and other bonuses for people who’ve purchased Picky Deluxe. I stress the word bonuses because I will still be keeping Picky Deluxe as an optional add-on, with all of Picky’s core features available to everyone. As for the oodles of smaller improvements, here’s the list: ‣ The Now Playing bar now appears throughout Search, not just on the first screen ‣ Fixed a very annoying bug where the app could freeze up when skipping tracks from the Now Playing screen ‣ Updated the design of the Playlist details sort menu, and added new options for sorting the tracks by duration ‣ Longer artist names now display in full across multiple lines when viewing an album or playlist’s songs ‣ If the Recently Added or Recently Played widgets fail to load an album’s cover image they’ll now display its title instead ‣ Fixed a bug where genre filters could appear hidden in some situations ‣ Fixed a bug that could prevent restoring a previous Picky Deluxe purchase from another device ‣ Fixed a crash when pressing the “View song queue” button if the queue hadn’t loaded

‣ New and improved organizing of multi-disc albums into sections, with one-tap playback, queuing, and shuffle actions per disc ‣ Artists’ own albums will be preferred over compilations when generating their artwork for the Artists list ‣ Fixed a couple of layout bugs with the Now Playing screen (for smaller devices and when AirPlay is selected) ‣ Further optimized the loading of very large libraries Happy New Year, folks — stay tuned for more updates coming your way. ‣ Even more widgets! The new Random Pick widget displays albums from your collection one at a time throughout the day, and is a great way to surface deeper cuts from your library. And by popular demand I’ve also added a Recently Played widget which shows the albums you’ve most recently been listening to. ‣ Picky is now fully optimized for iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. ‣ Recently Added (and Recently Played) widgets now have an option to use a more compact view that displays more albums: just touch and hold and select Edit Widget. Note: due to system limitations widgets added before this option was available can take up to a day to start loading again after the app update — to fix this faster simply remove and re-add the widget. ‣ Fixed a bug where the Recently Added widget could sometimes fail to load due to large album art. ‣ Fixed a visual glitch with the Now Playing bar and wide album art. Well folks, Picky 4.0 is here and it’s one of the biggest updates yet! Here’s what’s new: ‣ Updates for iOS 14, including new pull-down menus and Recently Added widgets so that you can display and play your latest albums right from your home screen. ‣ Easier access to your currently playing track from the bottom of every screen. ‣ Search your artists, albums, and songs with library-wide search. ‣ A tip jar! More on that below… ‣ Updated buttons for sorting and filtering, which show whether you have an active filter or not. ‣ Improved support for iPads with a trackpad or mouse. ‣ Selecting a one track album from an artist’s albums list now once again opens the album page instead of immediately playing the track. ‣ Design tweaks to the album detail headers. ‣ Playlist detail screens now display custom artwork and descriptions (where available). ‣ Small bug fixes and memory usage improvements. I’d like to thank everyone who has written in with feedback, beta tested, and anyone who has simply been patiently waiting for this update (search is definitely long overdue!). As you may or may not know, Picky isn’t my full-time job: it’s a passion project for me, and your support, encouragement, and feedback mean a lot. ‣ Fixed a couple of bugs on iOS 13.4: shuffling all songs now works again, and the app will no longer freeze up after shuffling a large number of tracks. ‣ Fixed a bug where songs on the Now Playing screen would sometimes be misnumbered.

‣ Added an option under Advanced Settings to override the system display setting and always use a Light or Dark appearance. ‣ Better sorting of albums by release date: using the date of the newest track on the album, which means better results for albums with prerelease singles. ‣ Fixed a bug where some track times could be displayed incorrectly. ‣ Improved memory usage and performance.

Good news, everyone: Picky is ready for iOS 13! ‣ The old dark theme button is a thing of the past: Picky now syncs up its appearance to your system Dark Mode setting (great if you’re scheduling it by time of day too). I’ve also gone and updated all of the dark colours, for a sleek new look. ‣ You can now touch and hold (or 3D Touch) throughout the app to see a preview and context menu for any artist, album, or playlist. ‣ The Now Playing screen has been freshened up with some new icons. ‣ When viewing albums by date added the newest track is now always used for sorting (handy for albums with pre-release singles). On a personal note, I’d like to thank you all for your support of Picky. This app is truly a labour of love, and I appreciate your patience during the times where I’m too busy to get an update out. Last month my family gained a new member, so I think it’s a bit of a minor miracle that I somehow managed to finish up these features while caring for a (now) one-month-old! So I’m dedicating this app update (are app dedications a thing?) to my wonderful wife Emily and baby Wyatt :)

‣ Picky now always opens up to the last tab you were on (Artists, Albums, Songs, or Playlists). ‣ Album detail screens now show total times in hours and minutes, and Playlist detail screens now show total times too. ‣ Picky now supports AirPlay 2, including an updated menu for choosing your audio destination and support for multiple AirPlay speakers at once. ‣ Queuing up large numbers of songs is now much smoother, the Now Playing queue is now properly updated when shuffling songs, and it won’t show up filled with untitled tracks when returning from the background. Unfortunately due to system limitations I’ve also had to remove the ability to remove tracks from the queue. ‣ Optimizations for the newest iPad Pro screen sizes. ‣ Loading improvements and bug fixes.

‣ Added support for new, bigger devices. ‣ Fixed a bug with the layout of the iPad mini-player when using Split View.

‣ Added an option to the main Albums list to Play All (based on your current filter and sort). ‣ Picky now remembers your last repeat setting, so if you turn on Repeat Song or Repeat All it’ll be preserved if you select another song. ‣ Fixed some bugs around how unknown artists and untitled albums are sorted and displayed. ‣ Made some under-the-hood improvements to song queuing. ‣ Fixed the grouping of different types of playlists.

‣ Fixed a bug on iOS 11.3 that caused a long delay when starting to play a new group of songs ‣ Improved the responsiveness of the playback slider ‣ Fixed a couple of other minor bugs Playback on the latest version of iOS is now nice and smooth — if you’re running iOS 11.2 I highly recommend updating to 11.3 to get the full effect. Stay tuned for another small update soon to make queuing even more seamless, with bigger changes on the way later this spring!

After a year of development Picky 3.0 is finally here! Here’s what’s new: ‣ Design updates for iOS 11, including new navigation icons. ‣ Picky is now fully optimized for iPhone X, including layout changes to the Now Playing screen. ‣ A huge under-the-hood rewrite of the app’s entire library syncing and filtering system: it’s faster, more reliable, and ready for future additions. ‣ Customizable app icons! With an in-app purchase you can unlock a bunch of fun app icons to choose from (including some without the Picky face, if you’re not a fan of mustachioed icons). ‣ A redesigned Settings screen for quicker access to theme and cloud music options. ‣ I’ve fixed an issue where compilations weren’t showing up in the Artists and Songs lists, and one where swiping the screen edge to go back would sometimes stop working. ‣ You can now 3D Touch on individual songs in the Now Playing screen’s queue to view the album the song belongs to. ‣ Picky is now a universal iPhone and iPad app — use it on any of your iOS devices without making a separate purchase! All future iPad updates will be coming to this app rather than the old Picky for iPad app. Thank you all for your patience as I worked on this big update. I’ve overhauled most of Picky’s code and it’s now in a great place to build upon, so stay tuned for lots of updates in 2018! Appy Holidays everyone!

This is just a quick update to fix an iOS 11 bug where adding to the song queue would restart the current track. Unfortunately iOS 11 users may still hear the odd pause from time to time (when queuing large numbers of tracks), but I’m working on improving that further. I’m also hard at work on a big 3.0 update and can’t wait to share it with you all — stay tuned! And, as always, I really appreciate all the emails and reviews that are being sent in — they really help me continue to make Picky better and better :).

‣ Want to see every one of your albums grouped by artist? The main Albums list has a new sorting option for that. ‣ The main Songs list can now be sorted by playback duration, just like the Albums list. ‣ Speaking of Songs, now that list (and each artist’s songs list) show track times. ‣ For all you iPhone 7 and 7 Plus people out there: I’ve sprinkled even more haptic feedback throughout the app! ‣ Have you tried Picky’s dark theme? Well, with new list separators and blank album artwork it’s now even darker! ‣ I finally tracked down and fixed that bug where Picky could lose track of what you had previously been listening to. ‣ Have you been enjoying using 3D Touch to peek and pop inside of Picky? Now you can also conveniently access your most recently added albums by pressing on Picky’s app icon on your home screen! ‣ In addition to filtering it you can now also sort the main Songs list: by release date, date added, or title. ‣ Tracks that were missing from the main Songs list (primarily from compilations) should all show up now. ‣ Fixed an occasional crash when loading the Playlists screen. ‣ Picky now supports 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus to peek and pop into artists, albums, and playlists. You can also use 3D Touch on the Now Playing screen’s cover image to peek into the current track’s album. ‣ Sort the Albums list by duration — great for finding something to play as a timer for workouts, chores, or other projects! ‣ That brief pause when adding a song to your queue? Gone! (Except for when you have shuffle or repeat on… sorry about that). ‣ Shuffling by album now works again! ‣ You can now swipe to enqueue entire playlists. ‣ Playlists’ tracks can now be sorted in reverse, in case you want to access their more recently added songs first. ‣ Fixed a bug where it would sometimes take two tries to start playback. ‣ Four-digit track numbers are no longer truncated. And as always, if you’re pleased with Picky a review would be much appreciated :).

‣ The main Albums list is now sortable! Reorder your albums by title, release date, or the date added to your library (which I find super-useful). You can now sort an individual artists’ albums list by date added as well. ‣ Oh, the Albums list also loads faster, and I fixed a couple of iOS 8.4 bugs. ‣ I’ve fixed several bugs, including (hopefully) a rare crash on iOS 8.2, and one where images for albums with no art on the first track wouldn’t show up. ‣ You can now hide album images in the lists if you so choose. ‣ There’s now a bit of a separator so that it’s easier to see where discs end and begin in multi-disc albums. ‣ Lyrics from Genius can no longer be viewed in-app (at their request), but iTunes lyrics still can (when available), and you can still easily jump to the Genius app/website to view lyrics and annotations. ‣ Albums with only one song now show up as individual playable songs in artists’ album lists. ‣ I fixed a few more bugs, including one where playlists weren’t properly filtering out movies and cloud items (depending on your settings).
