Description

Apollo was a powerful and customizable Reddit app for iOS

Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.

Again, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!

Editors' Notes

Apollo for Reddit is an excellent alternative to the official app, with stacks of useful features and tons of settings you can tweak for an even more personalized Reddit experience. Apollo has clearly been designed by someone who spends a lot of time on Reddit, because the app is full of things that’ll delight power users.

Mister Vimes ,

The best reddit client in the world - and it just keeps getting better

After reddit decided to kill AlienBlue in favour of their ridiculously bad in-house app, my mobile reddit browsing days were over - until I stumbled across Apollo, the best reddit client iOS has ever seen.

Everything works exactly as you would want it to work, the interface is fast and intuitive, everything is laid out logically (and beautifully). There’s just no contest, the official reddit app is a travesty compared to Apollo.

Best of all, it’s under constant, active development, and the developer is always engaging users to figure out the best improvements to focus on. At least for the foreseeable future there’s no chance of Apollo going the way of AlienBlue, and therefore no chance of having to switch to the horrible official app.

Now with more plastic! ,

Thanks for all the fish

Really enjoyed using this app to make reddit a fun place to hang out and learn all sorts of things. I tried a few of the others but the UX and the customisation made this the winner app. Sadly the reddit management did what managers always do, so now we have to go. It’s not a bad thing in the end, as mindless scrolling had become the default behaviour: don’t get me wrong, the community content was really valuable and I contributed where I could (and got put in my place when I was wrong too, thanks). But it’s time to go, time to walk away and build something new together.

Thanks Christian, it’s been a blast for the last 10 years or so. Good luck mate.
