Description

The Dexcom G5® Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System is the world’s first mobile CGM system that lets you make treatment decisions without confirmatory fingersticks.*

Use this app if you have the Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System.

The Dexcom G5® Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System provides real-time glucose readings for patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes every five minutes. With Dexcom G5 Mobile, dynamic glucose data can be accessed and shared safely and conveniently anywhere, anytime to your smart device.

* If your glucose alerts and readings do not match your symptoms or expectations or you are taking medications containing paracetamol/acetaminophen, you should perform a fingerstick to confirm your blood glucose level. A fingerstick is needed every 12 hours to calibrate.

The Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System provides personalized trend alerts right on your smart device and lets you see when your glucose levels are going too low, or too high, so you can better manage your diabetes. You will receive certain Dexcom system alerts and the Urgent Low Alarm even if your phone sound is off, set to vibrate, or in Do Not Disturb mode. This will allow you to silence calls or texts but still receive CGM alerts. Alerts that you will continue to receive, even if your smart device is silenced, include: Urgent Low Alarm; Low and High Glucose alert; Rise and Fall Rate alerts; and certain critical system alerts. Custom alert sounds are available, including a Vibrate-Only option on the phone for glucose alerts other than the Urgent Low Alarm.

In addition to the exceptional performance provided by the Dexcom G5 Mobile sensor, you’ll receive other valuable features:
• Intuitive and user-friendly interface
• Dexcom SHARE® remote monitoring is built into the G5 app, allowing you to share your glucose data with up to five followers, who can remotely monitor your glucose data and trends on their compatible smart device with the Dexcom Follow app. Share and Follow functions require an internet connection.
• Today view widget, which allows you to view your glucose data on the lock screen of your smart device
• Health app access so you can share retrospective glucose data with third party apps

Apple Watch

Needs iOS update

Mostly, the app’s been really helpful and fantastic up until a few months ago. I recently updated my iOS to the latest software, and since then the app has been mucking up quite a bit. The two biggest problems are that the readings are less accurate (often out by 1-2.5 levels) and every time my phone runs out of battery, the app stops working and I have to uninstall and then reinstall it, which is quite an inconvenience. They really need to update the app’s iOS compatibility and pretty soon. I rely on this app for my health and welfare, and it’s not very comforting to know that I may be getting inaccurate readings because I want to have the latest software on my phone.

G5 app is broken “Can not access Dexcom server”

Hasn’t been updated for over a year, meaning it doesn’t support anything newer than iOS 11. I, like 91% of the population, run iOS 12 or 13. I don’t think it’s a viable strategy to recommend people run iOS that is EOL. My company mandates employees update their phone to fix any security vulnerabilities.

Recently the app freaked out (“stopped working” message) and I had to reinstall it, that’s where problems began. Now, I can’t get beyond the “Let’s get started” screen. I’ve just got a message “Can not access the Dexcom server”. I’ve tried installing it on two other phones and have the same problem, and must be hurting other users too. It’s been like this for over a month, so I’m guessing Dexcom no longer care about their G5 users, which is extremely poor considering how much the sensors and transmitters cost.

Dexcom, I’ve been paying you thousands of dollars a year for many years now. What is going on with the G5 app? Australia, and probably other non-US regions can’t get G6 yet, so it’s sad to see you’ve given up on the G5 app like this.

Is there anything good about this app?

Here are some reasons why:
1) the inability to silence low glucose alerts. With its progressively louder tone, I have had work presentations ruined, long sleepless, frustrating nights as well as having to explain to people why I can’t silence my phone even in night mode because it just does not stop going off until you’re back in range, which can take a while especially if it’s a bad hypo or just with CGM lag or because it’s not actually accurate! As a fully capable adult you should be able to tell it you’ve treated the hypo and to stop the notifications, or at least make them vibrate only, and that you accept all responsibility should anything happen to you because of that.
2) it’s constantly saying it’s updating and some features won’t be available
3) the obnoxious amount it interrupts phone activities when it wants to be calibrated, especially the start up calibration. I’ll decide when you get calibrated thanks, I don’t need a reminder and constant beeping every 5 minutes

The only useful thing about it is that prevents me deleting it is that I don’t have to pull my pump out every time I want to look at the CGM
I wish I was technologically savvy so I could figure out the bootleg apps 😪
