Retried the app

Frollo isn’t bad since my last review of it was a 1 star. Overall I’m happy with the app and will continue to use it in hopes it will improve. Would like to see more filtering and more graphing options, like a pie chart of express categories as an example.. I’m going to list pros and cons of the app..

Pros:
1 - Great Customer support. Contacted them about an issue connecting to the bank and they fixed it very quickly.
2- Auto sync with almost every financial institution in Australia.
3- uses open banking for any bank that offers it.
4- clean interface.

Cons:
1- even though it recognises loan repayments, it doesn’t automatically mark them as bills.
2- there’s no way to search for re-occurring transactions. That would make it a lot easier to find bills. As it stands you have to manually scroll through the transactions and hop you find all your bills.
3- there’s no “automatic budgeting” so what I mean by that is, when creating a budget, you have to in select a category then set a budget limit for that category. Would be better if the app analysed last 12 months of transactions then suggested budgeting categories based on my spending history. If I was good at budgeting/tracking expenses it wouldn’t really be an issue. (ADHD things)
4- it would be good if we could create buckets, like I have office expenses but I don’t have appropriate bucket to put it in.

Hi Trget, thank you so much for the new rating. We've agreed with all the cons you listed. They are definitely valuable to us and in the list of improvements we will be working on. Cheers, Team Frollo

Please fix the recategorisation!

Update Dec ’23: Not sure how this could be rectified. But want to share so others don’t have the same issue, I invested a lot of time in recategorising transactions correctly (original review/rant). I then as good practice updated my bank account PIN number. Frollo required me to unlink and relink the accounts. On doing so, I lost ALL that work of recategorising my transactions. I’m so sad. 😭

This app has so much potential. I love the ease of integration with banks. But, when it comes to recategorising transactions even the apps online documentation says the UX is boring and tedious. I’ve had no luck with similar or repeat transactions being added when I choose to recategorise ‘this and past transactions’, so yeah jumping thru 4 separate screens for every repeat transaction is a terrible experience. So for me this feature simply does not work. Please fix it. And a couple of suggestions. One suggestion is to allow a search of transactions and then allow a multi select of some or all results and the ability to recategorise those selected in one go. Another suggestion is to better the UX when selecting a category. Instead of having to either type to filter or scroll the long list, put the most recent selected categories at the top of the list. And finally, a suggestion for iOS users, enable the swiping back to the previous screen instead of having to reach for the back button.

Developer Response ,

Hi Ash, thank you so much for your constructive feedback. We hear you. This is to acknowledge that we have put your suggestions in our product backlog for consideration. We will definitely improve our categorisation engine and recategorisation feature because we understood they are really important to our users. Cheers, Team Frollo

Problems

I was very excited to start using this app after pocketbook went down. Unfortunately I’m unable to connect my credit card through Bankwest and there doesn’t seem to be any support for this. This means that a huge chunk of my spending cannot be tracked. I don’t see how this app can accurately monitor your spending if it doesn’t allow you to add credit cards. Another problem is the buckets. When Frollo is categorising your transactions, there are only four buckets. These are not editable which is crazy. I have a business transaction account and also business related transactions that I would like to keep separate from my personal or lifestyle transactions. However, there should be a bucket for work.. I see this as a major oversight. And it may actually detract from me continuing to use this app in future.
Pocketbook had this down pat and understood how people want to track expenses for tax.

I hope that this app will improve over time because it feels nice to use and I like how it automatically categorises a lot of your transactions. Even though I have to edit many of these. It does still save time though.

Developer Response ,

Hi Dinaz39, sorry to hear that there are some issues with your account linking. We hear you. Your feedback has been added to our product backlog. We're currently working on some improvements, when they're done, they may address your problems. At this point in time, you can change buckets for your transactions. If you select a category under 'popular' it will immediately apply the change with a default bucket for your convenience. But if you don't want to do that, you can select a category under all categories and you will be able to choose a bucket for it. This feature will also be improved. You would expect to see it by the end of this year. Cheers, Frollo team
