We have just returned from Japan, where this app was in use in major shopping centres in Tokyo. Each shop provided receipts which we then took to an information booth where staff assisted us to validate and process for tax refund. I’m confident that you can do that yourself with the app, but the help was appreciated to ensure my lack of being tech savvy didn’t affect the process and to make sure we didn’t breach Japanese customs regulations. The easy and fun part was then transferring the refund into, in my case, PayPal. The app is logically presented and clear to the user. So yes, I would recommend the app for those travelling where this method can be used.

I like the idea that you dont have to hassle to lodge a refund at the airport. Do it on Apps which is quick and easy. The only thing i’d say is make sure keep the original tag/price so that you can take a photo of your items with it when you get home as a proof of purchasing and leaving the country. I got my money back less that a week.

The shop that sold me the goods didn’t have tax free onsite so they use an agent in a nearby shopping mall. It took me some effort to locate them on the mall as they had moved location. Once I found the tax free counter a young Japanese woman who spoke good English helped me through the process. I also had to download their App for the refund request. Once you upload the details they need then the App concludes with a message saying they will process the refund in 5-10 days. Please note that there is also a fee for the service of about 1.8%. Overall an good experience. The best shops have the service onsite and it’s done even more efficiently. This App method is the second best option. Enjoy your shopping in Japan.

The app it’s so handy. At the both shopping centres I went they had a place that do it to you and after they fill all the information you just need to add your credit card/bank details and it shows how much you might get! Very good!
