Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag. It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality. Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy! (Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

It works as advertised.A note for the developer: sometimes I get video URLs with ‘#dialog’ at the end. Until that tag is manually deleted, attempting to play a video will refresh the page or go back to the previous page.

While it’s nice to block ads from YT, there are still two issues that annoy me so much, that I had to delete Vinegar.1. The screen dims when you pause the video. I have no idea what that has to be. It reduces legibility and sometimes you just want to rest your eyes over the still, but when it’s dimmed you see less detail2. Sometimes, probably when YT would serve an ad, Vinegar would mute the whole video. So, the whole experience becomes interrupted.All up, both of these issues were so annoying that I had to delete it, despite having paid for it.

Been using this for ages now. Still a great extension. Works like a charm.Also want to thank the dev for constant work and updates due to YouTube/google’s ever more aggressive attempts to cram as many ads into yr eyes as possible.
