I’ve been using Spark for several years now and have become quite attached to it. Each time Apple updates Mail, I take a look to see, and even though it now does inbox sorting, still doesn’t compare to how I can manage and do my emails. The smart inbox, along with tagging and putting aside until later are my go to features. But there are so many simple things that make it just work, none of the other email clients compare.

As a developer myself I'm incredibly conservative in giving negative software reviews. Unfortunately after spending some time with this update, I am going back to Spark Classic, and will begin to look for other more sustained options for the longer term.It very much feels like the developer is feeling restless and/or pressure to innovate / differentiate. In reality, this has brought about what feels to me as gimmicky / flashy functionality, with a classic 'start from scratch' MVP interface, at the expense of the fairly high-quality productivity-boosting software that Spark used to be.I hope that Spark's author/s come/s to the realisation that the third-party macOS / iOS email client landscape is very much lacking in anything that's simply...solid, with a power-user focus. At this point, I definitely feel like I'm mourning the loss of a piece of software that I'd grown quite reliant on.

Spark does a lot of things well but are outdated by many things that send productivity to the wall. For example, latest emails on desktop are sent to the bottom when the received email is opened and what should be in front of you on screen becomes a fact finding mission. Another example would be attachment location. Email attachments are not available in a central click and when the thread becomes long, the user has to reopen all emails historically to locate relevant attachment sought. Given the user has to rely more often than not on the heritage Gmail app this app would be sufficient as a free mail program but is unfortunately not to a standard where payment should be sought given fundamental oversights.

When an app undergoes a major redesign I try to give the new version a decent go. Often there is initial resistance to the new version, but after some time to unlearn habits from the old the new starts to seem quite good, even an improvement.Unfortunately in the case of the new Spark this was not the case. I gave it a few weeks, but it soon became apparent that this is just a major step backwards in oh so many ways. Fortunately the old version is still available as a separate "Spark Classic" app, so I am going back to that for now. I am however worried about how long the old version will be kept around, and am starting to think about what other mail client I will move to when it's gone.
