The app is essential if you want to navigate without regular stops to establish position. A paper map works if most of the cycling is along a river but the trip we did there was often a change in direction after 100m. One problem I did have is after I responded to a message on day 5 an error message kept appearing to redo the typing and no matter what I did I could not get rid of it. Unfortunately the error message block was right in the middle of the navigation dot. It lasted the whole day and eventually on the 6th day it disappeared.
