Presently enjoying Talkpal and would recommend it to anyone learning a foreign at an intermediate level.Yesterday and today I had difficulty signing in using Facebook. Thankfully I was able to sign in this evening. I do hope this issue does not reoccur given I have purchased a 12 month membership.

I’m sure this app is helpful for those who already know a language allowing them to practice it but it is completely useless for those trying to learn a new language. This wouldn’t worry me if the details in the App Store and on boarding made this clear. Unfortunately, these make it seem like you can start learning a new language from scratch. Only after completing the on boarding and subscribing to the trial, does it become clear that the app is pretty much useless for those who don’t know any of the language. This issue was compounded by a confusing UI without much guidance for what to actually do and where to start. Additionally the use of the words target and translation language is confounding. I ended up selecting Serbian for both of these (why this is even possible I’m not sure) and only after some trial and error did I work out which one should be English and which one should be Serbian. Again, I could see this being useful for some but certainly not for newcomers. Don’t waste your time. It’s actually a real shame because they’re a very few apps that offer Serbian as an option.

I have been using this to learn Japanese for just over a week. It doesn’t teach you the grammar, sentence structure or which particles to use. A lot of the writing, including the feedback is in kanji which is well beyond a beginner level. It also teaches a word and then uses it in a sentence in a different form without explaining why. There are some bugs including not playing the dialogue audio correctly. When it gives feedback it gives a top level green smiley face when I know I have pronounced it incorrectly. And when it gives you a lower level like yellow or red, it doesn’t highlight the words that were pronounced incorrectly so it is difficult to work out what you did wrong. I will continue using this app as I have paid for the subscription but I will need to use it in conjunction with better apps or lessons.

I am Maori from NZ but never knew how to speak Maori fluently, however I do know the basics and the pronunciation etc. So I downloaded this app to start learning more and work towards fluency. As soon as I started using the AI, I was instantly turned off by the absolute appalling pronunciation of the AI app. It pronounces the words like you would in English, rather than in Maori. This app has clearly not been tailored for each language to ensure everything they're teaching on this app is correct, ESPECIALLY THE PRONUNCIATION!For this reason I give it a 1 star because what other languages on this app does the AI mispronouces. I hope nobody unaware (such as those who don't know Maori pronunciation etc) uses this app to learn Maori. If they do they're going to be getting a completely inaccurate learning experience. You cannot sell a product claiming that it can teach you Maori when what you're teaching is way off.
