Storm season is here. Follow lightning across Australia on a live map, add radar and get alerts in km for your location and home. No login.
Lightning Alerts is a live lightning tracker and storm map for Australia, powered by enterprise-grade lightning data.
Follow storms from Darwin to Hobart and from Perth to Brisbane. Open the map without creating an app account and check recent strike activity before the beach, a surf, cricket, golf, fishing, boating, camping or a long drive. Distances show in kilometres. The map can show both ground-reaching and intracloud strikes, and Ground mode filters cloud flashes so busy storms are easier to read.
What you can see:
- Live map of recent strike activity across mainland Australia and Tasmania
- Nearby alerts for your location and one saved place, such as home
- An alert distance from 5 to 50 km for each place
- No app account required to open the map
- Ground-reaching and intracloud strike types
- Ground mode to reduce cloud-flash noise
- Closest-strike distance, age, direction and street context
- Strike strength, polarity and detailed strike type
- Polarity filter: show only positive or only negative ground and cloud strikes
- Strength filter and Find > Strongest in view
- Find > Strike history: the last 7 days around your location or saved place, with storm replays
- Camera aim: where to point your camera and how far to tilt it for red sprites above a distant storm
- Weather radar with strikes on the same map; play it to see which way a storm has moved
- Clear controls for alerts, ads, privacy and analytics
- Optional monthly Pro subscription: no ads and unlimited storm replays
In storm season, use Lightning Alerts before you head outside, while storms are nearby, or to keep an eye on home while you are away. Choose the strike filter, check the closest strike, and tap an alert to go back to the live map.
Photographers and sprite chasers can show only positive ground strikes, which are less common and often stronger. Tap a strike to see its distance and direction.
Lightning Alerts is a weather awareness tool, not an emergency warning system. Always follow official weather warnings, local rules and venue safety guidance.

New: Camera aim in Find helps you photograph red sprites above distant storms. It shows which way to face, how high to tilt and whether the sprites fit in your frame. Inspired by SpriteScope by Sylvain Reybaut. Also: tapping an alert draws a line from you or your saved place to its closest strike, and radar playback dims live strikes while it shows a past frame.
