The Marine Rescue App is a must have for all NSW boaters.

The free app allows you to Log On directly to Marine Rescue NSW, the State’s official volunteer marine rescue service, to register details of your next boating trip.

The app is simple and intuitive to use and once logged on will prompt you to enter details specific to your journey that are submitted to Marine Rescue NSW:

- Image of your vessel
- Number of people on board
- Number of hours on the water
- Your planned journey location

Once you’re back on shore, it’s just a matter of Logging Off to record your trip as complete and incident free. If you don’t Logged Off as expected, the App will alert us that you’re late and possibly in trouble, enabling us to swiftly deploy a search mission.

The App also comes with a safety tracking service for added peace of mind. The optional feature, which you can elect to turn on, records your location every 30 minutes, so in the event you’re in an emergency we can complete a targeted search mission.

MarineRescue is a great addition to your maritime safety toolkit.

Persistent Bugs

I’ve used the app a handful of times and find it frustrating. The last time I logged on I elected Pittwater as the destination from my history. Marine Rescue immediately contacted me to say the lat and long was actually Bermagui. I explained that it’s the app that’s at fault as the app supplies the lat/long when the user types in or selects from the map the destination. Another problem is that the option to choose from map is at the end of my (destination) history and as this is now a long list sits under the keyboard of the iPhone and can’t be accessed. The transit box is ghosted but for the new user or unaware appears as if it’s already ticked. Hats off to Marine Rescue for always phoning to clarify with us when information is unclear but the app really needs rectifying for both MR and users’ sake.

Battery Sapper

I used the previous version and thought it was great.
Went out today and it prompted me to update so I did. After having to go through all the registration details again, trying to log a trip was not as easy as previously. Also after a couple of hours on the water my phone went into low power mode, it had killed my battery with the usual tracking mode.
Bring back the old version.

Difficult to set departure and destination

It’s difficult to select locations:
1. The ‘select’ button using map pin drop button appears under/below the keyboard so impossible to select this option
2. If after much fiddling you are able to get a pin drop, it doesn’t identify to correct location (eg said Nelson Bay instead of Soldier's Point)
3. Typing the location doesn’t get you anywhere. There’s no ‘done’ or ‘search’ button to enter what you’ve typed

At best you end up selecting any location that pops up so you can log on. I also had problems registering my canoe into the app in the first place as these don’t have rego numbers (don’t know if this has been fixed).
The reminder if your overdue is helpful.

TIA

Developer Response ,

Hello Dharma chick,

thank you for your feedback. The developers have taken note and will add fixes in a future release of the app.

As for registering your canoe, you can always use your name as the registration. We have quite a few kayak and canoe users using the app who use their name as the rego.

Happy to discuss any issues with you, just email it@mrnsw.com.au and we will contact you directly.
